The California Department of Justice is seeking a Digital Forensic Technician (State Classification: Information Technology Technician) to join the Office of Digital Investigations.

Once trained, this position allows for a mix of in office and remote work. It is expected that this person work within commuting distance of Sacramento, CA.

Duties Include:

  • Preserve electronically stored information in support of investigations and litigation.
  • Performs routine tasks in the digital evidence lifecycle including intake, chain of custody, preservation, security, integrity and return.
  • Conduct digital forensic activities of a limited scope, utilizing tools and applications including, but not limited to, Encase, FTK, Cellebrite, XRY, WinHex, and WinFE.
  • Performs data import and export activities.
  • Performs all social discovery functions per requested depth and terms.
  • Effectively and efficiently produce documentation of work in the form of a record of activities performed culminating in a written report.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience or familiarity with X1 Social Discovery, Encase, FTK, Cellebrite Physical Analyzer or other forensic software.
  • Ability to learn concepts and practices for capturing and processing digital forensic data and Electronically Stored Information (ESI).
  • Ability to learn ESI concepts and software used to analyze ESI data. (i.e. Relativity, Concordance, etc.)
  • Knowledge of network concepts.
  • Knowledge of data storage, backup, types of backups and recovery concepts and tools.
  • Knowledge of basic physical computer components and architectures, including the functions of various components and peripherals (e.g., CPUs, Network Interface Cards, data storage).
  • Ability to learn steps required for the correct documentation of collecting, seizing and preserving digital evidence, such as chain of custody.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise documentation

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Six months of general information technology experience performing technical or support tasks for computer systems or services OR
  • 15 semester units (or 22.5 quarter units) from an accredited college or university including at least 6 semester units (or 9 quarter units) of information technology or closely related course work; OR
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and education.

Salary: $3,783.00 - $6,051.00/month.

Range A: $3,783 - $5,068

Range B: $4,104 - $5,501 (1 year of additional experience OR completed an additional 30 semester units)

Range C: $4,515 - $6,051 (2 years of additional experience OR completed an additional 60 semester units)
