POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Academics will lead the organization’s vision, practices, and innovation in teaching and learning. The director champions our school’s expectations and belief that all scholars will be prepared for success in the college and career of their choice because of our rigorous academic program and support. Their vision and expectations are rooted in deeply held values of equity and belief that all kids deserve an excellent education. The director will report directly to the school leader and join the executive leadership team.
Responsibilities
- Deliver exceptional academic results by driving the school’s vision for effective teaching and learning, including instructional systems and routines and intellectual preparation that drive teacher development and student achievement.
- Employ a research-based, data-driven approach to decision-making and academic goal-setting.
- Maintain the school’s instructional cycle (preparation and internalization; observation and feedback; data analysis) to drive instruction and decision making.
- Collaborate and co-lead by working closely with the executive leadership team to collectively lead all aspects of the day-to-day teaching and learning, especially with a focus on instructional systems, practices, and outcomes.
- Build trust-based relationships and navigate across organizational layers to achieve challenging goals.
- Develop talent by coaching a team of content specialists and school leaders in implementing instructional systems with fidelity.
- Conduct classroom and coaching meeting observations with leaders focused on improving coaching and instruction.
- Meet regularly with leaders to discuss student achievement data, coaching, and instruction.
- Keep up to speed with education, brain science, and pedagogical best practices to ensure continuous improvement in our school's educational approach.
- Innovate and partner with the operations team to ensure continuous improvement around student academic data systems, the use of technology to support and facilitate instruction, and curriculum purchasing.
- Design and deliver ongoing professional development to academic leaders.

- Excellent oral and written communication skills

- An entrepreneurial spirit, embracing the opportunity for creativity and hard work inherent in a growing organization
- A positive, solutions-oriented attitude and drive for excellence
- Experience designing or implementing curriculum initiatives and practices, and organizational leadership experience
- Demonstrated thorough knowledge of cognitive science and latest research on how students learn
- Demonstrated ability to coach teachers and/or leaders to improve student achievement by setting clear goals, consistent development, active coaching and support, and providing actionable steps to improving performance
- Demonstrated proficiency in the key levers of instructional leadership- data driven instruction, planning, observation/feedback, and professional development
- Ability to deconstruct complex problems and develop coherent, actionable strategies
- Core Knowledge Language Arts and Achievement First curriculum familiarity preferred
- At least 5 years of classroom teaching experience
