Young women coming out of high school have the world ahead of them, but many of them don’t know it. Some think college is their only option; it’s not. If they choose a traditional four-year route, however, part of The Lighthouse | Black Girl Projects work is to support them through their journey—academically, socially, materially, civically, their overall wellbeing. We know four years of university isn’t for everyone and doesn’t have to be a measure of success. For some, it’s a two-year institution; for others, trade school; and others choose to run businesses. Whatever the route, TL|BGP provides space for curiosity, growth and development for college-aged young women, alumnae of its programs and those exploring the beginnings of their work lives through its college and early career programs.
Job Overview
The director of college and early career programs is responsible for planning, developing, and facilitating all programs that work alongside young Black women who are college aged and early career, locally, regionally, nationally and globally. The position reports directly to the chief learning officer. The person in this position must develop, maintain, manage and host Black girls- and women-centered programs, strategize about the best programming to meet the needs, and build continuous feedback loops with participants to ensure relevance. The ideal candidate has experience in higher education with a community organizer’s sensibilities. The position requires an individual with a mentoring and youth-centric orientation, able to work effectively and safely with youth ages 18-25ish.
The position requires a thoughtful, proactive, detail-oriented, organized, self-starter who connects dots and understands the importance of a strategic focus on Black girls and women in relationship to the overall work of community, this age group, and to the work of the organization. The candidate must have a proven ability to communicate effectively, strategically, and courteously and be able to maneuver through complex interpersonal situations effectively while remaining calm under pressure. The ideal candidate is a people-person possessing excellent judgment who can work collaboratively with staff, at all levels of the organization, community partners, board members, and organizational consultants.
Position Responsibilities
- With input, create new and maintain current annual set of programs for the education & programs team for college-aged and early career Black women and conduct activities in accordance with program goals and descriptions
- Cultivate existing relationships with colleges, universities, businesses and other partners with the goal of ensuring sufficient resources and access to services for program participants
- Design and help deliver biweekly benchmarks for Reese|Brooks|Gilbert Collegiate Leadership Fellowship participants
- Design and help deliver quarterly events/programs for alumnae networks
- Bring Black women and girls together through planned, intentional encounters
- Recruit, train and support a collective of Black women advisors, as needed, for respective programs
- Participate in all mandatory program meetings (e.g., orientation, curriculum development review, site-based program planning/improvement meetings, work retreats, and professional development sessions)
- Work with chief impact officer to collect and provide information and documentation necessary for completion of program evaluation, reports, and program development needs (e.g., attendance, etc.)
- Submit a narrative report to the leadership team at the end of each program period or year, whichever comes first
- Advise the chief learning officer on the needs of the program, such as any challenges that might affect program delivery
- Hire, train and schedule student ambassadors to participate in recruiting and organizing training activities/presentations
- Develop applications, brochures, and program forms relative to the outreach needs of various program(s)
- Develop support systems and mechanisms to achieve program component goals, such as increasing student retention, and graduation rates as outlined in the program proposals
- Curate social media content as it relates to your work
Qualifications
- Demonstrated commitment to Black girlhood, women and/or other racial minority disenfranchised populations
- Ability to multitask and maintain open lines of communication and understanding of projects
- A minimum of three years’ experience in a similar role; higher education experience is preferred
- Project management savvy, managing deadlines independently
- Flexibility to work as part of a team or independently to meet goals; self-directed to act and resolve issues; strong initiative & organizational skills; self-disciplined to meet deadlines and strong work ethic; ability to anticipate needs and be proactive
- Handles confidential information and with care, understands and respects the sensitive nature
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including relationship management, tactful negotiation, and diplomacy; excellent judgment, integrity, and character

- Compensation: $50,000-$60,000, depending on experience
