POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Communications leads a team with the mission of ensuring excellent communications for both internal and external audiences. This position is responsible for identifying and fulfilling communication needs for the Sisters and their various entities, including departments and committees, by:
- Listening to goals expressed by Sister leaders and department directors.
- Developing relationships that facilitate understanding and trust.
- Producing consistently high-quality and engaging communication products.
- Managing equipment, networks, financial resources and schedules effectively.
- Maintaining a proactive focus that supports the evolving realities of the Sisters, current communication practices and technologies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Mission, Vision, Values: Supports the philosophy, goals, objectives and programs of the Province. In consultation with the PLT, takes advantage of opportunities to deepen her/his understanding of the SNJM community and mission, vision and values.
- Communication Planning: In collaboration with the Province Leadership Team and department directors, develops and implements plans for coordinated communication through publications, video and audio productions, social media and web platforms. Gathers information on behalf of the PLT and aids in analysis of the data that will be used in communication projects and/or as part of strategic planning processes. Evaluates and makes recommendations for new communication initiatives, or modifications to existing ones. Develops and maintains a production schedule that minimizes competing needs for Communication staff resources.
- Internal Communications: Coordinates all aspects of Province print and electronic publications intended for distribution to Sisters, Affiliates and/or Province staff, including daily prayer requests, the weekly Connections newsletter and occasional newsletters from the Human Resources and Health & Well-Being departments.
- External Communications: Oversees copywriting, editing, design and production of Province print and electronic publications and other materials, including website, social media and podcasts, intended for public distribution. Ensures consistent and effective use of branding and visual design standards.
- Public Communication Procedures: In coordination with the PLT and Province department directors works to create policies and procedures that govern the external release of accurate information concerning Sisters, employees and/or facilities. Provides training as needed to ensure effective implementation. Assists with preparing public statements or responses to media inquiries. Under the direction of the PLT, acts as the spokesperson for the organization or coordinates with an outside agency for media relations and crisis management communications.
- Collaboration Beyond the Province: Following PLT direction, the Director supports and collaborates on communication projects involving the Congregation and/or other communities and organizations.
- Management: Supervises staff, develops and manages the department budget, approves invoices and tracks payments to vendors and service providers related to the Communication Department’s mission. Provides oversight of appropriate technology infrastructure procurement and management. Assures appropriate oversight of IT equipment and service contracts.
- Data Management: Ensures accurate and timely updates of the Province contact information systems and a system of appropriate access controls to confidential Province information stored in databases and network systems.
- Professional Development: Actively collaborates with communication personnel from other religious communities. Participates in the Communicators for Women Religious (CWR) or other significant professional organizations. Regularly seeks avenues to improve communications for the U.S.-Ontario Province.
- Other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to accomplish satisfactorily the essential duties and responsibilities listed above. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or ability required. Education: Bachelors or higher degree with an emphasis in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing and/or technology.
Experience: Minimum of five years of demonstrated management experience in communications, public relations, journalism and/or technology. Non-profit experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Understand, respect and appreciate the mission, values and justice priorities of both the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary and the Roman Catholic Church. Must possess an understanding of the role of religious life within the Church andsupportively foster the mission of the Sisters of the Holy Names to promote justice and create community.
- Demonstrated mastery of verbal communication skills, both written and oral.
- Must possess demonstrated spokesperson skills to develop clear and concise public messages.
- Ability to create and execute plans for electronic and print publications with minimal supervision.
- Organizational and managerial skills, including the ability to foster collaborative relationships among department directors to support the ministries of the Province.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, Adobe publishing programs and Adobe Acrobat Pro, database management, website content management tools and social media platforms.
- Familiarity with network security and data management systems.
- Proven ability to manage, coach and evaluate staff members, to provide guidance and support in their development; ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Ability to maintain high ethical and professional standards.
- Possess creativity, enthusiasm, and initiative.
- Ability to see the big picture and carry out routine communication and administrative tasks.
- Possess flexibility, maturity, discretion, and ability to support others.
- Must model SNJM Guiding Values in carrying out work activities and responsibilities.
- Requires occasional travel to SNJM locations, events or meetings or professional development meetings.
- May at times require working on evenings or weekends, typically during community-sponsored events or meetings or to attend professional development events.
