San Domenico is a K-12, co-ed school, with international boarding and day students in our Upper School.

Purpose:

The Director of Residential Life reports directly to the Director of Upper School /
Assistant Head for Academics and is responsible for visionary leadership, staff selection, training, and supervision, and development of residential life programs. The Director of
Residential Life is a full-time, twelve-month, staff position. The Director is expected to live on campus and be a visible and active member of the school community. San
Domenico School has approximately 140 students living on campus together with another eight to ten members of the residential staff. Other members of the residential staff live off-campus.

Responsibilities of a Director of Residential Life:

Leadership

1. Develop and implement policies and procedures for the Residential Program and keep all handbooks associated with program up-to-date;

2. Develop goals and strategies to accomplish the mission of the Residential
Program in collaboration with residential staff, Associate Director of Upper
School, and Assistant Head of School.

3. Develop Residential Life curriculum, which includes all activities associated with the Residential Program.

4. Assist in developing and supervising the budgeting process, allocating resources according to specific needs in the Residential Program.

5. Recruit, hire, train, and supervise residential staff. Oversee scheduling staff and accounting for shift hours of staff.

6. Develop and strengthen relationships with campus partners who support the every-day operations of Residence Life facilities (Health Services, Food Services,
Maintenance, Upper School faculty, Librarian, Athletic Director, Conservatory and
Virtuoso Staff).

7. Develop and maintain calendars for residential life activities.
8. Attend Admissions events and support the admissions process.
9. Provide a consistent adult presence on campus during the afternoons and weekends.
10. Provide adult supervision in one dorm throughout the entire year.

11. Establish consistently-followed policies and procedures that ensure the safety of the students.

Management

1. Supervise the residential life staff and student prefects.
2. Reads monitor and respond to dorm reports.
3. Plan and preside over weekly staff meetings and weekly student support meetings.
4. Oversee budget for Residential Life Program.
5. In partnership with the Associate Director of Upper School and the Assistant

Head of School, develop and implement policies, procedures, and documentation for disciplinary responses for boarding students.

6. In partnership with Campus Security and the Emergency Preparedness Team, develop, implement and enforce safety and security procedures, facilitating appropriate responses to any type of emergency situation involving residents.

7. Monitor fire safety compliance, facilitating the planning and conducting of fire drills in coordination with appropriate staff.

8. Maintain personal certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), as well as that of all residential staff.

Training and Mentoring

1. Develop training for all residence staff with the goal of fostering a strong living-learning community as well as developing and inspiring each person’s greatest potential.

2. Develop positive working relationships with residential staff through regular
(weekly) meetings and personal mentoring in order to develop each individual’s potential in their leadership role.

3. Assess performance of residential staff, periodically and annually, and keep them

informed of strength areas and growth areas.

Facility Management

1. Assess physical and structural needs of residence halls and apartments, and advocate for resources to address these needs with the assistance of the
Assistant Head of School and Chief Financial Officer.

2. Inspect major maintenance problems and determine severity, ensuring that appropriate follow-up occurs by necessary campus staff.

Education

1. Provide leadership and vision in the overall philosophy of education in the residential staff, ensuring living and learning environments conducive to the holistic growth and development of students as well as the promotion of student learning.

2. Work with the Upper School Counselor, Upper School Dean of Students and the
School Nurse to provide for the emotional and physical well-being of student residents.

Conflict Resolution

1. In partnership with residential staff, assist residents experiencing crisis situations.
2. Maintain communication with parents of boarding students.
3. In partnership with residential staff, assist in resolving various student conflicts, including roommate and peer conflicts.

Other Responsibilities

1. Participate in dorm duty shifts each week and be an active presence in the boarding program.

2. Serve on Emergency Preparedness committee.

Qualifications:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required to perform this job.

Professional

1. Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in education or a closely related field.
2. Progressively higher levels of administrative and supervisory experience.
3. Management and administrative organizational abilities, with a minimum of three years of supervisory experience preferred.

4. Understanding of the critical development issues facing adolescents.
5. Experience as a dean of students or other roles that involve student discipline preferred.
6. Strong counseling/listening skills.
7. Ability to speak in front of large groups.
8. Experience in managing and resolving conflict.
9. Strong writing skills.
10. Previous Residence Life experience preferred.

Personal

1. Excellent interpersonal and social skills.
2. Must be able to relate to a diversity of ages (from adults/ parents to incoming late adolescent students), as well as individuals from a diversity of cultures and economic backgrounds.

3. Ability to keep calm in stressful or crisis situations.
4. Ability to multitask.
5. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
6. Ability to maintain enthusiasm and a sense of humor

Compensation:

The salary range is $120,000 - $140,000, salary is commensurate with experience. We also offer an excellent benefits package including School-provided on-campus housing, medical/dental/vision/life/matching 403b retirement plan and daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
