Kenyon College is conducting a search to fill the position of Disability Services Advisor/ Assistive Technology Coordinator. The Disability Services Advisor/ Assistive Technology Coordinator supports the integration of students with disabilities into Kenyon Campus life and classes through direct student services, coordination of student technology accommodations, and fostering equal access to the Kenyon experience through advocacy, inclusionary practices and campus partnerships.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Working collaboratively as part of the 4-person team in Student Accessibility and Support Services, the Disability Services Advisor /Assistive Technology Coordinator works directly with prospective and currently enrolled students by (including but not limited to) conducting intakes, reviewing documentation, explaining student legal rights and responsibilities and recommending/facilitating accommodations while striving to promote the development of appropriate self-advocacy skills. This position works to foster and maintain communication between faculty, staff, and students with disabilities on access and accommodation issues and provides on-going consultation and problem-solving around the provision of authorized services and accommodations while maintaining confidentiality as required by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

As part of the interactive process, this position will assess individual student technology needs, and identify and procure necessary technology- providing training to both students and their faculty as needed. Utilizing their expertise in current assistive technology and the ability to apply creativity to solve technology-related puzzles (including voice output, voice recognition, text enlargement, OCR, smartpens, course presentation software, and other technology used in the education setting) this position makes recommendations for technology to meet student learning and classroom needs across campus and manages both the alternative text procurement process and educational technology (such as CART and GLEAN) for students with print and communication disabilities.

Alongside their team, this individual will strive to stay abreast of emerging and ongoing legislation/policy, state and local issues affecting access for individuals with disabilities as well as participate in campus committees relating to disability issues, rights, and responsibilities under the law while advocating for disability access and inclusion on campus. QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Vocational Rehab, Social Work, Special Education, Instructional Technology, Psychology, or a closely related field.
  • 2 years of experience working with people who have disabilities in an educational or social service setting particularly those using assistive technology.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Special Education, Instructional Technology, Social Work, or a closely related field.
  • 3 years of experience working with students with disabilities in an educational setting reviewing documentation and providing accommodations.
  • Accessibility certifications through organizations such as IAAP (International Association of Accessibility Professionals).
  • 2 or more years of experience providing solutions to technology access issues with a broad range of disability populations in a busy student services office, preferably in a higher education environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to prioritize and manage the two unique components of the job: assistive technology and direct student services.
  • Knowledge of the educational needs of students with various disabilities in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with various assistive and adaptive technologies used by students with disabilities use daily within and outside of the classroom environments is necessary.
  • Ability to handle confidential disability-related documentation and records according to federal and state laws.
  • Working knowledge and practical application of federal and state laws regarding disability rights.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and organizational skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong computer skills and effective use of various software and hardware programs used in a multi-function disability office including but not limited to database systems, email, social networking, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently as well as contribute to team processes at the unit and division level.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the various Models of Disability and the ability to support all student identities in alignment with Kenyon’s Diversity Equity and Inclusion statement.
