A letter from an electrician to an electrician.

My name is Ben and I am the founder of Integra Electrical. I am a master electrician, starting my career the summer of 1993 when the floods hit Des Moines; what a summer that was! I completed 5 years of apprenticeship in 1998 and began working as a service technician for a reputable company in Des Moines. I did many small office renovations, pulled a lot of voice and data cable, installed lighting, PLC’s, worked at Maytag in Newton, completed service repairs on envelope folding machines at a factory in Des Moines, and many other things. I know what it takes to be a good electrician.

I also know that I saw my career unfolding before me, and I was completely unsatisfied. Sunday nights would roll around; I would hate them because I knew I would get up in the morning and have to do the drudgery of my week all over again. I’m not kidding. I felt this unbelievable stress Sunday night! I hated it! And for what? A pay check for my wife and I to live. Great…..

Was this all there was to life? Was this all that my career was going to stack up to?

I wanted to be part of a team that included me. A team where I was more than just a tool to make the business owner money. A team where I knew what the score was on the jobs I was on, a team that gave me room to grow, a team that encouraged me to break out of the monotony of the daily grind and strive for something greater.

I did not know that team was out there. I did not know the energy it takes to become something different than the electrician who just punches the clock on Monday and gets his check on Friday. I did not know what to do, or even why I felt the way I did. But I believed it could be different, and so I set out to make a difference.

Guess what? Everything I mentioned above, is the driving force behind the company I am building. I have taken the frustration I talked about and am using that to build a company that does not leave my Sunday nights regrettable.

Having said that, I am looking for a few electricians that know something could be different. A few people who say, “I am ready to stretch; I am ready to start to change my blue collar thinking of working for retirement, to a mindset of daily personal growth.”

I know that is not for everyone. I know that most electricians out there struggle to get out of the cardboard box that they have been told exists around them. I know the beliefs that electricians have of “it will always be this way.” And I know that if that is you, no sense giving me a call.

But if you are ready to challenge the “reality” that all the old timers have told you, maybe even the reality that your parents have told you, then you are a phone call away. The hardest step will always be the first step. Why that is I do not know. But you will not get forward momentum anywhere in your life until you get your life pointed and moving in the right direction.

Remember the movie The Matrix. Is it going to be the red pill or the blue pill? Take the red pill and I will help you see the unpleasant truth; take the blue pill and remain in blissful ignorance. The choice is yours. Just remember, you only have one life. Today will come and go and you will never have a chance to do this day over. I am not the only one with the answer of course. But until you start to challenge the status quo, you will always live in “blissful ignorance”.
