Harnett County is nestled in the heart of North Carolina between Raleigh and Fayetteville, covering 601 square miles and taking care of over 135,000 citizens. Harnett County prides itself on having innovative protocols, providing excellent patient care, and being integrated with today's best practices. Innovative cardiac monitoring is provided to the community with the use of the Zoll X Series monitors. The County has 16 Paramedic level ambulances based around the county, 3 BLS transporting units and a wheelchair van each shift that responded to just over 32,000 calls last year. The units are supplied with the power load system from Stryker to prevent injuries to the providers. The County also has a Tactical Medic team that responds with the Harnett County Sheriff's Department during classified situations. Lastly, the County has an active Community Paramedic Program. This program is tasked with following chronically ill and provide special care to help maintain a healthy life.
Harnett County provides a free health clinic for employees. Continuing education is provided to all staff on a monthly basis. The County pays the annual dues for all part-time and full-time employees to be a member of the North Carolina Association of Rescue and EMS. Harnett County maintains an excellent partnership with Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine in which providers attend regular simulation training and use the anatomy (cadaver) lab for real life experience.
- Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance; administers Emergency Medical Technician level life support techniques and procedures based on patient assessment; monitor patient status; assists in setting up IV's and assists paramedic with other care.
- Serves as driver/operator and single caregiver on wheelchair transport van; transports patients to medical facilities, nursing homes and medical appointments as necessary.
- Gathers patient medical and insurance information from the patient, family members or by standers and inputs into the computer.
- Completes necessary records and reports for emergency calls including information for billing documentation and legal accountability.
- Signs for the chain of custody form for narcotics from off-going crew and maintains responsibility for them until the end of shift or transfer of custody.
- Participates in a continuous training program to improve competence in medical technical work, ambulance service and operation.
- Participates in cleaning of ambulance, equipment and EMS facilities.
- Maintains proper inventory of emergency equipment and supplies.
- Inspects and tests ambulances and their emergency equipment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Considerable knowledge of emergency medical procedures and techniques.
- Considerable knowledge of equipment and supplies employed in emergency care of patients and accident victims.
- Skill in recognizing patient traumas, signs and symptoms of medical emergencies to determine appropriate treatment.
- Ability to perform duties in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques, medical protocols and standing orders.
- Ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergencies and stressful situations.
- Considerable knowledge of County geography and locations of roads and streets.
- Ability to safely operate an ambulance or transport vehicle in adverse conditions and according to motor vehicles laws.
- Ability to work with a diverse socioeconomic population, based on the unique situations encountered.
- Ability to communicate effectively in a tactful and firm manner with the public.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient contact.
- Ability to accurately record services provided on required forms and/or computer programs.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-employees and those contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to maintain vehicles, equipment, and facilities.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
High School or General Education Development Diploma (GED) and some experience as an Emergency Medical Technician; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Licensing and Certifications:
Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver's License. Certification by the State of North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services as an Emergency Medical Technician.
Preferred Certifications:
Basic Life Support certification (BLS); Emergency Vehicle Driver certification (EVD); National Incident Management System certification (NIMS) and HAZMAT certification.

The selection process will consist of a panel interview, physical ability assessment and a scenario-based assessment with the candidate selected being subject to a pre-employment drug screening, criminal background check and driving history check.
