JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Environmental Education and Outreach Coordinator Department: EPD
Reports to: Environmental Director Employment Status: Full time, Non-Exempt
Salary: Entry Level DOE, $17-$19 per hr. Driving Classification: Valid Driver License

Summary:
Under the direction of the Environmental Director the Environmental Education and Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for planning education and outreach activities, developing education and outreach materials, and organizing and attending events to promote environmental education and outreach for the Jamul Indian Village of California Environmental Protection Department, including but not limited to Air, Water, Recycling, Solid Waste, Natural Resource Management, Emergency Response, Forestry, Pest Management, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Wildfire, Drought, and more.

The candidate should be familiar with federal and state environmental statutes and regulations. The Environmental Education and Outreach Coordinator should be familiar with federal, state and local agencies and programs including U.S.EPA, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, BIA, CalEPA, U.S. Forest Service, CALTRANS, California Water Resources Control Board, and others. Other duties may include, but are not limited to, attending training; public outreach and education; and cross-disciplinary research.

This position is responsible for meeting the Jamul Indian Village of California’s Environmental Protection Department goals and objectives under the direction of the Environmental Director.

None

The Environmental Education and Outreach Coordinator shall always conduct their self in a professional and courteous manner while upholding the Jamul Indian Village of California’s integrity and level of ethical standards.

Distinguishing Characteristics
:
The Environmental Education and Outreach Coordinator differs from the Environmental Director position in the level of responsibility, knowledge and experience. This is a labor level position taking direction from the Environmental Director.

Essential Functions
: include but are not limited to the following:

  • Research environmental education areas for possible teaching and material development opportunities.
  • Plan, organize and present annual events for Jamul Indian Village of California according to grant tasks and as needed to fulfill education and outreach responsibilities.
  • Attend local and Tribal events according to grant tasks and as needed to fulfill education and outreach responsibilities.
  • Plan, develop and present environmental education and outreach materials in a timely manner: presentations, newsletters, brochures, STEM projects, art projects including new formats and opportunities of offering educational information for the Tribal Community and others per grants and as requested. Small and large groups depending on event.
  • Maintain accurate records and information for grant related purposes.
  • Write reports and summaries as requested per the grant tasks and as requested.
  • Attend training to increase knowledge of environmental education and outreach resources.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently within established guidelines in a fast-paced setting, detail-oriented and able to prioritize and coordinate activities, meet critical deadlines and value teamwork.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate diplomatically with co-workers, customers, government agencies and community members.
  • Maintains the highest level of confidentiality, impartiality and reliability.
  • Travel to meetings, trainings and conferences relating to environmental protection, as directed.
  • Complete quarterly grant tasks as assigned.
  • Complete other duties and activities as assigned.

Education:
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent, supplemented by courses in biology, chemistry and mathematics. Required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry, biology, microbiology, environmental science, or a closely related field is highly desirable.
  • 40-hr HAZWOPER certification a plus.

Experience
:
  • 2+ years’ experience in Education and Outreach Coordination. Preferred.
  • 2+ years' experience in the Environmental or Natural Resources field. Preferred.
  • Experience working in Native American Tribal Communities. Preferred.

Knowledge and Skills
:
  • Conduct shall be in a professional and courteous manner while upholding the Tribe’s integrity and level of ethical standards.
  • Knowledge of environmental issues, laws, and regulations applicable to compliance and protection.
  • Knowledge of principles of business letter writing, report preparation, and technical research.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and other computer programs.
  • Excellent mathematical skills.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and laptop (Mac’s and PC’s).
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making recommendations.
  • Ability to review official documents such as grants, regulations, technical specifications, environmental documents, ordinance and statues and legal terminology.

Skill and Ability to:
Work efficiently and independently from oral and written instructions with a minimum of direct supervision; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other personnel while maintaining a positive attitude towards the work assignments. Must be able to work independently and have strong organizational, writing, verbal, and interpersonal skills; Creativity and flexibility are essential in assuming significant responsibility.

Other Characteristics:
Possession of a valid California driver's license; working outside, when necessary, in inclement weather. All employees are expected to follow the Tribal Personnel Policies and Procedures of the Jamul Indian Village and must adhere to any additional applicable addendums. Must acknowledge and agree to maintain a Drug-Free workplace as a condition of employment with the Jamul Indian Village. Must pass pre-employment and random drug testing during employment. A DMV print out with a valid class “C” driver’s license and background check will be required.

Physical Demands:
Must be in good general health with no impairments to perform the duties of the Tribal Environmental Education and Outreach Coordinator. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle, reach or feel and operate equipment. The employee is frequently required to sit or stand for extended periods and walk distances, as well as stoop, bend, kneel and crouch. The employee is occasionally required to react effectively to emergency situations. Position may require employee to be able to lift and push heavy objects.
