Equipment Operator II Job at Whitfield County, GA
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to provide a medium skill level position for a Public Works when a potential employee has documentable construction related experience or that can demonstrate proficiency with specific equipment. The primary duty will be to operate a variety of equipment, either in a lead role or as part of a larger crew.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Operates a variety of equipment, not limited to, but includes: Backhoe (loader bucket), Trac Hoe, Tandem Axle Dump Truck, Single Axle Dump Truck, Dozer, Wheel or Track Loaders.
May serve as an assistant crew leader, assigning and directing work, training in job skills, and evaluating work.
Performs a variety of tasks in road and right-of-way construction and maintenance.
May direct traffic control at work sites; flags traffic through work sites; sets up safety cones, barricades, barrels, and signs; assists in maneuvering equipment within work sites. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure the safety of employees and other individuals.
Performs general and preventive maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, refueling vehicles, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing or cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop or work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, fuel logs, vehicle/equipment maintenance reports, equipment repair requests, timesheets, or other documents.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
NOTE: Within the Equipment Operator 2 position there are 3 separate levels, designated as 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3. The purpose of the levels are to separate employees by the CDL license held. An Equipment Operator 2.1 holds a Class C license only. An Equipment Operator 2.2 holds a Class B CDL license. An Equipment Operator 2.3 holds a Class A CDL license or a Class B CDLs with Hazmat, Tanker or Passenger endorsements.

Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED; three years of experience in equipment operation in the construction and maintenance of roads; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia appropriate class Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).
