Experienced Surigcal Oncology/Plastics Coder
I. POSITION SUMMARY:
Under direct supervision from the Director of Coding, the Surgical Oncology/Plastic Surgery coder reviews medical records to assign the appropriate diagnostic, E/M, and CPT codes, including surgical procedures. The coder works independently on a daily basis and is responsible for assigning codes and appropriate charges with a high degree of accuracy. Accuracy is critical as our physicians pay strict attention to their wRVUs.
II. PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Reviews medical records to assign ICD, CPT, HCPCS codes accurately
- Meets and exceeds productivity and quality standards
- Reviews physician documentation and performs audits to determine accuracy as needed
- Updates charges (as needed) and processes the records in a timely manner
- Reviews tasks and corrects codes as needed
- Provide training to fellow staff to improve coding outcomes
III. ADDITIONAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
IV. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED Required with completion of a coding certification program
- Associates Degree in Health Information Management or similar preferred
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of plastic sugery coding for independent practices and hospital employed practices
- ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and surgical coding experience required
- Minimum 2 years’ experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified above.
Licensure/Credentials:
Coding credential required from AAPC (CPC, et. al.). AHIMA credentials are also considered (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Working knowledge of coding guidelines
- Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
- Advanced knowledge of medical coding, electronic medical record systems, coding systems.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of legal, regulatory, and policy compliance issues related to medical coding and documentation.
- Knowledge of current and developing issues and trends in medical coding diagnosis and procedure code assignment.
