Summary of Position
This position, located in Durham, N.H., provides leadership and support for the University of New Hampshire Extension Education and 4-H Youth Development program team for the purpose of developing resilient youth. The state specialist is responsible for connecting theory to practice, ensuring the 4-H program achieves positive outcomes for youth and families in New Hampshire. Program development involves grant writing, program design, and program evaluation such that stakeholders will be aware of program impact and staff will engage in data-driven quality improvement. The successful candidate will use their research and practitioner experience to help integrate statewide 4-H programming in collaboration with other program teams (Food and Agriculture, Natural Resources, Community and Economic Development, and Health and Wellness).

After six months, it is expected that the Extension State Specialist, Positive Youth Development will assume additional leadership responsibilities. This extra work will be compensated with a stipend. Beginning in the second year of employment, state specialists will secure 25% of annual salary through grants, cost-recovery, and/or departmental teaching appointment.

Other minimum qualifications
  • Ph.D. or terminal degree strongly preferred in applicable education or youth development discipline. A strong candidate with a master’s degree in appropriate discipline with a minimum of 5 years’ experience developing and evaluating youth development programs for K-12 youth may be considered.
  • Must demonstrate high ability to communicate with the public, both verbally and in writing
  • Must demonstrate effective team communication skills
  • Must be willing and able to collaborate with coworkers and partners
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel for work. Mileage will be reimbursed at the current federal rate.


Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to work in cross-cultural environments
  • Experience with 4-H Youth Development and other Extension programming
  • Experience authoring and managing grants
  • Applied scholarly interest in experiential education, workforce development, outreach with underserved/at-risk populations, or similar field
  • Experience working with community-based volunteers and stakeholders
