Roof Above is NC’s most comprehensive homeless service provider. Our mission is to unite our community to end homelessness, one life at a time. Focusing on individuals experiencing homelessness, Roof Above offers everything from street outreach to shelter to Rapid Rehousing to Permanent Supportive Housing. Roof Above’s services and programs reach over 1,200 individuals every day across seven campuses in Charlotte (up to 14 campuses in COVID). Roof Above was born through the merger of Urban Ministry Center and Men’s Shelter of Charlotte in 2019.

POSITION SUMMARY:
We are currently recruiting a Facilities Assistant with maintenance and custodial experience or training. The Facilities Assistant will be responsible assisting the Facilities Team in the maintenance of facilities & equipment of Roof Above Properties. Compassion, respect, and an understanding of those served by our mission is a must.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Help to maintain all common areas, bathrooms, offices, kitchens, laundry rooms, hallways, roofs, parking lots and grounds. This will require set up and break down of events, use of landscaping equipment and tools, mopping, dusting, sweeping, cleaning, lifting and moving items as it relates to storage and the reception of packages and donations.
• Work well within a team
• Respond to work order requests as assigned by supervisor in a timely manner.
• Assist the facilities maintenance technicians performing handyman tasks as needed
• Communicate effectively with fellow employees, volunteers, vendors and guests of Roof Above.

• Be willing, on occasion, to perform humble tasks as they relate to the nature of our work
• Be a good steward of all Roof Above property and resources

• Other duties as assigned by supervisor

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Participates in staff meetings, training, and development activities as directed.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

• At least 2-3 years of experience performing janitorial and or maintenance on commercial and/or residential buildings
• High school education (or equivalent) preferred; must have basic reading, writing, and math skills (Substantial relevant experience may be substituted for education)
• Task oriented - Proven experience in working autonomously in the absence of others or without supervisor’s direction
• Team oriented - Experience working in groups and can treat others in a positive manner; must be able to communicate effectively with fellow employees, volunteers, vendors, and guests of Roof Above
• Customer oriented - good customer service skills
• Basic computer data entry, and mobile phone skills required for time & attendance related functions.
• Demonstrated ability to manage time and schedule requirements
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with staffs & clients.
• Valid North Carolina driver’s license

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

• Fast paced with various physical tasks that will primarily be located at the Day Service Center. This role will serve other Roof Above sites as needed by Facilities Team
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
• Ability to move, walk, lift, bend, stand, grasp, climb steps/ladders and able to work in an elevated environment
• Ability to tolerate physical contact with, use of, and in close proximity to approved cleaning chemicals and supplies
• Ability to work in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings
• Daily schedule of first shift, Monday- Friday with breaks and meal periods. Some weekends and holidays will be required as the Day Service Center is open 365 days a year
