Job Description
Perform routine manual agricultural work involving a variety of general farming and maintenance tasks relating to research activities or projects supporting the agricultural program of the university. Most work reviewed by close checking. Personal contacts are generally limited to co-workers, and occasionally visitors and agricultural researchers.
Key Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Perform general farm maintenance work. Clean animal lots, pens, stalls, barns, sheds, etc. Clear, pile, load and spread manure. Cut and mow grass and weeds. Trim trees; cut, clear and burn (or otherwise dispose of) brush and dead trees. Dig drainage ditches and fill in gullies when erosion occurs. Erect and mend fences; dig post holes; set posts and hang gates; string wire and fencing as directed.
- Operate non-complex farm equipment under close supervision, which normally includes plowing, discing, harrowing, fertilizing, spraying, cultivating, and raking field, garden, and orchard crops ranging from large acreages to small experimental plots. May operate tractor, hay baler, truck, various tractor attachments, and other farm machinery. De-tassel corn and assist in cross breeding plants. Load and unload fertilizer, feed, seed, grain, hay, supplies, equipment, machinery and other materials. Operate small to medium sized truck to deliver such items as directed.
- Assist in the caring of cattle, swine, poultry flocks, and other farm animals. Feed and water animals; herd animals to and from pastures or lots. Provide fresh bedding in sheds; assist in breeding and farrowing as directed. Assist in handling animals so researcher can vaccinate, band, weigh or examine. May gather, wash and record egg production.
- Under close supervision, makes minor repairs on farm equipment. Replace damaged or defective parts, make routine adjustments, sharpen cutting edges, etc. Service trucks, tractors, and farm equipment by oiling, greasing, and fueling. Assist others in repair tasks and in the assembly of new equipment.
- Assist others in the construction and upkeep of barns, sheds, shelters, feeders, and other farm buildings or fixtures; assist in the construction and setting of simple concrete forms.
- Perform routine, non-technical tasks in feed mills, slaughterhouse, seed house, and other agricultural facilities. Mix, bag and load feed; wash, weigh and otherwise prepare swine and cattle for slaughter; assist in routine slaughtering operation. Clean, treat and sort seeds. Sweep, dust, wash and clean buildings and equipment. Carry out routine assignments relating to experimental plots. Take simple counts of weeds, buds, sprouts, aphids or other data pertinent to the experiment in accordance with specific instructions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
Salary Range: $11.15 - $16.60 per hour

Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to read and write.
- Some farm experience desired.
- General knowledge of farm work.
- Good physical condition and coordination as required to perform duties.
- A commercial driver’s license may be required for some positions.
