SME is seeking a Staff Engineer for a regular, full-time position with our Construction Materials Services group in our Lansing, Michigan office.

Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Becoming familiar with practices related to building and pavement construction projects and construction material testing and evaluation services. These services include but are not limited to: foundation subgrade evaluations, shallow and deep foundation construction observations, earth retention system construction reviews, concrete reinforcing steel reviews, pavement subgrade evaluations, masonry construction observations, and soil and concrete testing services;
  • Receiving introduction to SME professional practices such as:
  • Proposal preparation; Project registration; Project set-up; Assigning lab tests; Letters/report preparation; and Client maintenance, particularly in support of our CMS group in conjunction with members of our business development team.
  • This includes, but is not limited to: proposal preparation, client/project inquiries; negotiating professional service fees; and following up after projects have been completed;
  • Interaction and project assignments with other SME service groups and offices; and
  • Participation as an active team member in the continual improvement of our services, procedures, and operational functions.
  • Typical CMS Staff Engineer work - foundation subgrade evaluations, read and understand recommendations in Geotechnical Evaluation report, perform concrete testing in the field, perform density testing in the field, laboratory work as needed, write CMS reports, observe proofrolls of subgrade and aggregate base materials, perform visual engineering classifications (VEC's) as needed, help Geotech team with project setup (if needed).

Requirements for this position includes:

  • A BS in Civil Engineering;
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have previous Co-op/Intern experience and an interest in Consulting Engineering;
  • Ability to read plans and specifications;
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills;
  • Identify and solve problems, and work well in a team environment;
  • Exemplify safe practices and follow the company's compliance standards;
  • Motivated self-starter, punctual and hard worker;
  • Strong analytical ability and problem solving skills and excellent judgement;

  • Must be able to sit, stand, stoop and/or kneel for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to walk and work on uneven ground/terrain.
