Definition

Under the general direction and supervision of the NFSA Chief or his designee, and physician sponsor when appropriate, the firefighter performs emergency procedures in order to preserve and maintain life and property. Firefighters are also responsible for maintaining facilities, apparatus and equipment.

Firefighter I/EMT III: Base pay $20.83/hr $60,656.96annual*

  • Average annual wage for EMT III/ACLS certification (including OT): $69,352.15

Firefighter I/Paramedic: Base pay $23.12/hr $67,325.44/annual*

  • Average annual wage for Paramedic I/II certification (including OT): $87,335.07

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma, or GED; IFSAC or State of Alaska Firefighter I or obtain within 12-months of hire and Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic certifications by the State of Alaska or National equivalent as a minimum.
  • Employee must obtain an AK AEMT certification or EMT III and be deemed capable of standalone operations by the Physician Sponsor within 18 months of hire, if applicable.
  • This position will be required to obtain Firefighter II certification, and will be required to obtain and maintain applicable EMS certifications throughout employment within timeframes set by the Fire Chief and Physician Sponsor.
  • This position requires a valid, unrestricted Alaska driver’s license that must be maintained at all times.
  • The NFSA employee must reside within a 20-minute response time of a department station.
  • Experience as an on-call employee with Nikiski Fire Service Area, EMS certification as a paramedic, an AA degree in Fire Science or Para-Medicine is preferred.
  • Physical Ability Testing will be required.
  • Firefighters must become Standby qualified within 12 months, and will be required to become engineer qualified within time frames set by the department.

Essential Functions

EMT I - AEMT

  • Performs firefighting duties according to standard operating procedures including directing water or chemical agents for the control and extinguishment of fires, positioning and climbing ladders for rescue and fire extinguishment, creating openings into buildings, protecting property from water and smoke damage, and emergency rescue operations for fire trapped victims.
  • Performs emergency medical skills as defined by the State of Alaska and departmental Standard Operating Guidelines for the certification level held at the time of hire and/or obtained after employment. Certification levels shall be maintained at each level as a condition of employment.
  • Responds to fire, medical, rescue and other emergency calls.
  • Performs assigned duties in maintaining apparatus, buildings, equipment, grounds and hydrants as directed by supervisor.
  • Participates in scheduled drills, attends firefighting and EMS courses to improve knowledge and skill level, learns hydraulics and pump operation to perform engineer duties, and assists on-call employees with their departmental education.
  • Has a working knowledge of the proper use of fire department emergency tools and equipment.
  • Has a working knowledge of proper radio procedures.
  • Knows and follows departmental safety policies and procedures.

  • Participates and assists in training programs for department staff, in public education and fire prevention activities.
  • If qualified to receive incentive pay, maintains required certifications and attends required training.
  • Maintains required certifications and meets required training objectives.
  • Prepares records and reports as assigned.

Paramedic

1. A NFSA firefighter/paramedic, when under the supervision of a sponsoring physician, may perform the following activities: (The direct supervision of these activities can be delegated when caring for a patient in a hospital under the direct supervision of a physician, at the scene of a medical emergency when in voice contact and monitored by a physician, or when under the specific standing order of a physician.)

Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation;

  • Initiates and maintains peripheral intravenous routes using approved intravenous techniques and solutions;
  • Performs pulmonary ventilation by approved methods;
  • Obtains blood for laboratory analysis;
  • Performs gastric suction by intubation;
  • Administers parentorally, orally, or topically, any agents and/or solutions;
  • Performs other emergency procedures authorized by a supervising physician.

2. Performs firefighting duties according to standard operating procedures including directing water and chemical agents for the control and extinguishment of fires, positioning and climbing ladders for rescue and fire extinguishment, creating openings into buildings, protecting property from water and smoke damage, and emergency rescue operations for fire trapped victims.

6. Has a working knowledge of the proper use of fire department emergency tools and equipment.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk, use hands to feel or handle objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear; and smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently transport up to 50 pounds, and occasionally transport over 100 pounds.
