Mondays and Wednesdays 12-8pm, and Saturdays 8-4pm
Position Summary:
To educate, encourage, instruct, and supervise members in the Wellness Department with safe and effective fitness principles. Provides a quality experience that meets the needs of health seekers, members, program participants, and the community.
Essential Functions:
- Properly instructs members on the use of strength training equipment, free weights, flexibility exercises, and all cardiovascular machines.
- Provides effective individual supervision and encouragement during new member appointments.
- Intentionally connects members and program participants to one another.
- Communicates appropriately with individuals based on readiness to change.
- Identifies and celebrates the successes of members and program participants.
- Displays empathy in support of helping member and program participants build confidence to achieve their health and well-being goals.
- Understands different health needs in order to adjust activities and program to serve all.
- Creates a safe environment in which all individuals feel welcomed and respected.
- Helps to create new approaches to serve Healthy Living needs of members and program participants.
- Understands and aligns delivery of Healthy Living programs to program goals and objectives.
- Reports any incidents, accidents or problems in a timely and effective manner to appropriate personnel.
- Ensures wellness center is clean and all equipment is in working order and maintenance records are properly maintained.
- Exercises good judgment around areas of responsibility.
- Meets the association standard for attendance, punctuality and dependability.
- Wears neat and appropriate YMCA clothing for completion of work duties.
- Is cooperative with providing fill in assistance for co-workers.
- Adheres to all Y Brand guidelines and receives prior approval for use and creation of any Y related social media from the Marketing department.
- Is an advocate to the Y by promoting our cause. Assists with the annual campaign by increasing awareness about the campaign within the Y community.
- Learn and actively utilize ADP Employee Portal on a consistent basis.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience working in a fitness facility and/or in customer service.
- Personal Trainer Certification or Foundations of Strength and Conditioning (offered by Y-USA and ACE) within 90 days of hire, or a 4-Year Degree in Exercise Science or related field.
- Current CPR/AED/Basic First Aid Certification.
- Working knowledge of proper exercise equipment use if applicable, good body mechanics and healthy exercise practices.
- Ability to respond to inquiries and verbal face to face requests as well as written requests.
- Ability to effectively present information in a clear, understandable language in a group situation.
- Ability to apply logical thinking to a wide variety of practical problems.
- Ability to solve practical problems and design and implement work processes.
- Ability to meet the association standard for attendance, punctuality and dependability.
- Possess the ability to handle multiple tasks and demands.
- Demonstrates a high tolerance for interruptions and varied routine.
- Proven desire to “take charge” of areas of responsibilities.
- Ability to keep confidences related to office and personnel matters.
- Ability to work successfully with many types of people.
- Participation in YMCA of Southern Maine In-Services.
- Maintain current certifications.
- A criminal background check is required and may include fingerprinting through the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), prior to hire.
Salary
Starting at $15/hour, depending on experience.
