Job Description:

Sims Metal Management is seeking a Fixed Asset Accountant to join its Sims’ location in Jersey City, New Jersey working directly with the North America accounting team and shared service center. The role is based in Jersey City, NJ supporting the U.S. legal entities of the Sims North American Group. This position is responsible for performing general accounting functions for fixed assets and includes accurate and timely reporting for fixed assets for both book and tax purposes.

Responsibilities:

  • Enters newly created assets, manages and assists in the capital expenditure process with new assets, and maintains and disposes existing assets to GL and the FA system for both book and tax purposes.
  • Processes journal entries for depreciation, additions, dispositions, capitalizations, intercompany sales, and transfers in support of assigned areas.
  • Reconciles all asset accounts on GL system to FA system totals monthly; investigates and resolves variances on a timely basis. Communicates to the Accounting Manager effectively.
  • Prepares Fixed Asset schedules for monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting.
  • Responsible to provide all Fixed Asset tax depreciation reports on a periodic basis for the different tax depreciation methods in a timely manner (to meet filing deadlines) to the Corporate Tax Department and must meet deadlines.
  • Works closely with the Indirect Tax position in supporting the indirect taxes paid on fixed assets.
  • Supports assigned internal and external audit activities, including Internal Control compliance.
  • Completes special projects, planning, and analysis as requested by accounting department leadership.
  • Proactively seeks to keep abreast of accounting, reporting, and disclosure standards promulgated by the IFRS, FASB, SEC, and PCAOB that affect internal accounting and reporting practices.
  • Maintain integrity of fixed asset accounts across all legal entities and oversee all related elimination entries as required.
  • Work closely with the business and finance/accounting personnel to support the fixed asset and depreciation accounts reported on the general ledger and provide account reconciliations for the accounts for both book and tax purposes.
  • Identify and drive process improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in Accounting or a related field from a four-year college or university;
  • Experience with a Fixed Asset System (i.e. SAGE/FAS);

· Solid understanding of accounting rules and associated accounting skills;

  • Accounting experience with a financial accounting system (i.e. AX, SAI, Hyperion);
  • Able to analyze and review statutes, regulations, and case law and make appropriate recommendations to the business;
  • Detailed and deadline-oriented, organized, and able to deliver on timeliness;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, specifically Microsoft Excel;
  • Basic knowledge of Hyperion or similar accounting software;
  • Highly motivated, strong work ethic, hardworking, able to work in a fast-paced environment, and work with many people;
  • Must have knowledge of both book and tax rules governing fixed assets and depreciation;
  • One to three years’ related fixed asset experience preferred;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and being able to clearly and concisely interface with all levels of management.
