The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) seeks a Food Services Assistant/Dishwasher to maintain the cleanliness and sanitation standards using machine and manual cleaning methods, as well as to prepare items for the self-serve bar, cold foods, and food platters. This position also ensures the café is maintained as a clean, safe and sanitary facility within the WVSOM Student Center. The scheduled shift for this position is 7:00am – 3:30pm, Monday through Friday. Not all activities of this position occur within the confines of the stated schedule and will require regular evening and weekend scheduling. This position reports to the Director of Food and Beverage.

This position is a full-time, non-classified position, non-exempt from FLSA regulations concerning overtime; entry level salary is $26,715 ($13.70/hour) plus an excellent fringe benefit package. Not all activities of this position occur within the confines of the normal shift and may require regular evening and weekend scheduling.
Education/Knowledge

Minimum Education
High School or GED

Required Licenses/Certification
The position requires a High School Diploma or GED as well as a valid driver’s license. This position also requires the incumbent to obtain a food handler’s permit.

Skills Required
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain a professional demeanor in any communication capacity (written or verbal), along with excellent communication skills;
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and operate a cash register.
  • Knowledge of kitchen production techniques.
  • Coordination and accuracy of motion to use commercial kitchen equipment, as well as the ability to be regularly exposed to the noise and moving parts of the equipment.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to plan, organize and set priorities.
  • Knowledge of record keeping.
  • Knowledge of correct English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs independently.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as required.

Dishwasher Responsibilities
  • Sort and rinse dirty dishes, glass, tableware and other cooking utensils and place them in racks to send through dish machine.
  • Sort and stack clean dishes. Carry clean dishes to cook’s line and other proper storage areas. Rewash soiled dishes before delivering.
  • Change dishwater in dish machine frequently.
  • Wash pots, pans and trays by hand as needed.
  • Empty and clean waste receptacles; maintain recycling operation.
  • Set up or break down dishwashing area.
  • Clean and roll/unroll mats.
  • Fill/empty soak tubs with cleaning/sanitizing solutions.
  • Sweep/mop floors.
  • Assemble/disassemble dish machine.
  • Sweep up trash around exterior of café and garbage dumpster.
  • Conduct general café and restroom cleaning as directed.
  • Wipe up any spills to ensure kitchen floors remain dry.
  • Notify Director or Assistant Director any time dish machine wash or rinse cycle falls below safety standard temperatures.
  • Do not touch dirty dishes before touching clean dishes without washing hands first.
  • Sweep, scrub, mop, disinfect, wax and polish floors, hallways, stairs, elevators and other areas using both hand and power equipment as requested. May be required to mix commercial disinfectants, germicidal detergents or other cleaning agents.
  • Set up appropriate furniture and materials for a variety of meetings, conferences, workshops and social functions located in the different campus buildings. May include the setup of small tents.
  • Change towel and soap dispensers as required.
  • Maintain a clean sanitary workplace in accordance with county, state, and federal regulations.

  • Prepare and mix ingredients for salads.
  • Wash and clean fruits and vegetables, peeling and cutting as required.
  • Provides salads, vegetables, fruits, and deli platters for café self-serve bar and catering events held on the WVSOM Campus.
  • Stocks condiments and specialty areas for each meal.
  • Obtains necessary items from storage areas as needed for standardized recipes.
  • Maintains the beverage area within the WVSOM café.
  • Operates a cash register as needed.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or as directed.
