Forensic Pathologist's Assistant Job at Virginia Dept of Health
The Virginia Department of Health, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME), Tidewater (Eastern) District, located in Norfolk, Virginia, is seeking a temporary, hourly (wage) Forensic Pathologists’ Assistant. This position is a temporary position and is funded through June 30, 2023. (If additional funding is provided, this position may continue beyond this date.)
This position will work weekdays, Monday – Friday, and weekends and holidays on a rotating basis. There is an occasional need to work after normal work hours. The Forensic Pathologists’ Assistant will be responsible for assisting the Chief/Assistant Chief Medical Examiners in the completion autopsies and external examinations. This position will be responsible for collecting toxicology specimens, collecting evidence, document examinations by photography and notes, and assist medical examiners with generating an autopsy report. This position will be responsible for selecting and submitting tissue for histologic processing, microbiological culture, and other ancillary testing as appropriate. This position performs radiographic procedures to include x-rays, whole body scans and CT studies under the supervision of the Assistant Chief Medical Examiner. This position consults and collaborates with members of law enforcement, investigators and healthcare team members as indicated and appropriate. This position will triage cases based on understanding of medical examiner’s jurisdiction and guidelines on autopsy or external examination determination and assist with case calls and/or scene response as appropriate. This position will have an active role in teaching medical students, pathologist assistant students, pathology residents, forensic fellows and interns that rotate through the OCME and outside groups as appropriate.

This position will not work more than 1500 hours per year. This is a temporary, hourly (wage) position. Duration of employment – current – June 30, 2023. Employment may be extended beyond June 30, 2023 based on available funding.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Must have experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), database usage and data entry with strong keyboarding skills. Required to push/pull/maneuver weights up to 500+ pounds, with and without assistance, stand for long periods of time, traverse uphill, rocky or otherwise unstable terrain. Must be able to respond to mass disaster scenes and other out of district assignments for up to a 2 week rotation. Basic photography skills; to include knowledge of digital photography with a digital camera and the ability to save images on various types of media (CD, USB, digital server). Graduate of a NAACLS accredited Pathologists’ Assistant education program. Valid Driver’s License required.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience working as a Pathologist Assistant. ASCP Board Certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant and maintenance of certification (must be obtained within one year of employment). Experience or training in forensic sciences and death investigations. Ability to communicate effectively as a teacher. Possess critical thinking and analytic skills.
Special Requirements
Must be able to work days, weekends, and some holidays throughout the calendar year. The selected applicant must possess a valid driver’s license. Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check and E-Verify. Other financial, credit, driving, or other background checks prior to employment may be required for certain positions.
