Position Purpose

The Forestry Worker prunes, plants, maintains, and cares for the trees, shrubs, and other foliage planted within the City.

Public Works: The Forestry Worker position in Public Works Urban Forestry will perform tree maintenance on median trees. This maintenance may include (but is not limited to): pruning, removal, planting and watering. Experience in the safe operation of chippers, chainsaws, aerial lifts and skid steers preferred but not required.

Essential Functions

1 Maintains, plants, cares for, waters, prunes, and generally monitors all foliage, trees, and shrubs planted within the urban environment of the City; performs manual labor in the care and maintenance of all trees and related.

2 Receives work orders and requests from the City, other departments, or community members and performs necessary care using the appropriate tools; ensures trees are kept in tip top health for a better environment and safe for the public.

3 Plans, digs, spaces, and stakes large trees and other foliage; waters and ensures the proper care for all newly planted trees and shrubs; monitors height clearances and other standards and regulations; performs storm and other emergency clean up and care.

4 Operates heavy and light equipment in various weather and inclement situations; identifies hazardous situations and mitigates risk and potential safety situations; communicates with community and general public concerning work orders and requests.

5 Performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs to equipment; checks for cleanliness of tools and equipment; ensures all chainsaws, lift trucks, and wood chippers are in operable condition.

6 Drives and operates City trucks to transport workers, materials, and equipment to and from jobsite.

7 Perform all other work as needed or assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION:

  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Two (2) years tree maintenance experience (e.g. pruning, trimming, planting and removal of trees.)
LICENSE :
  • Valid Driver License with good driving record.
  • Must obtain class A or B Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within probationary period.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Availability to work twenty-four (24/7) on- call status
  • Subject to inclement weather conditions.
PREFERENCES:
  • Ability to demonstrate good teamwork, leadership, interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication.
  • Ability to have basic computer skills, and maintain excellent internal and external customer service.

1 General Arboriculture methods and tree maintenance and care
2 Knowledge of the use and care of hand and power tools, such as jackhammer, cement mixer, and power auger.
3 Knowledge of surface preparation and adaptability of various surface materials.
4 May require standard colors, configuration, and placement of lane markings and traffic signs.
5 Knowledge of custodial, carpentry, plumbing, painting, mechanics, landscaping, and specialized equipment.
6 Ability to receive oral and written instructions.
7 Ability to perform math calculations. Read charts and maintain written records.
8 Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods.
9 Ability to lift and work with heavy equipment.
10 Establish and maintain strong working relationships.

The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.


For evaluation purposes, acceptable qualifying experience for all positions must have been in a paid capacity unless noted otherwise in the minimum qualifications for the posted position.

Additionally, 30+ hours per week will be counted as full-time employment and will receive full credit for the amount of time employed. A minimum of 15 through 29 work hours per week will be counted as part-time employment and will receive half credit for the amount of time employed.
