Job Description - Retail Associate

The nonprofit Evanston Rebuilding Warehouse invests in our communities by reusing building materials, reducing construction waste, and training, supporting, and connecting people seeking careers in the building trades. We divert building materials from landfills through two reuse retail stores in Evanston and Chicago and offer deconstruction services to homeowners that want to save their building materials from landfills. We teach community members to repair and repurpose building materials through education workshop programs. Finally, we run a paid workforce training program to support individuals overcoming barriers to employment to access careers in the building trades.

We seek a Full Time Retail Associate to join the organization’s team. The Associate helps keep the retail store running efficiently and smoothly. The Retail Associate is responsible, with the entire staff, for the professional image of the organization and providing a welcoming and helpful experience for people to buy and donate materials. The Retail Associate moves and organizes building materials and appliances within the warehouse, including pick-up and delivery of these materials. The Associate assists warehouse customers while they are shopping. Other tasks can be assigned by the Retail Store Manager or Director of Social Enterprise.

The position works both Saturday and Sunday . Shifts are generally from 10am-6pm. Weekend. The Retail Associate reports to the Retail Store Manager.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Assists customers while shopping and provides helpful customer service
• Moves, organizes and displays building materials and appliances within the warehouse, in/out of the parking lot for customers, and assists with pick-up and deliveries
• Receives material donations and prices per our policies and procedures
• Helps to maintain a clean and organized warehouse
• Contributes ideas on ways to improve or optimize warehouse procedures
• Attends monthly staff meetings and participates in ongoing safety updates, training and employee reviews
• Additional duties as assigned

Job Skills and Qualifications:

• Retail and/or Sales Experience
• A strong customer service orientation - friendly and positive spirit that helps customers efficiently and smoothly
• Ability to lift at least 50 pounds regularly and safely. Can demonstrate knowledge of proper lifting, moving, climbing, stacking and storage procedures
• Interest and knowledge of building materials, home repair and renovation
• Bi-lingual English/Spanish a plus
• Interest in our nonprofit mission and being a part of a fun and collaborative team!
