General Maintenance Worker 2nd Class Job at Virgin Islands Water & Power Authority
Job Summary
Under general supervision, the General Maintenance Worker 2nd Class performs repair and maintenance work requiring an intermediate degree of skill. Work involves inspection, repair, maintenance and installation of all types of water plant equipment and machinery.
Because the Authority has a responsibility to serve the public 24 hours per day, an employee in this class is expected to work overtime as conditions demand, and may be required to accept overtime on short notice during emergency or unusual conditions and to perform essential work as assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintains and repairs water distribution system.
- Inspects water mains, meters and valves to detect leaks.
- Bolts leak proof collars to water mains to stop leaks.
- Installs packing material in valves to make them watertight and replaces defective water meters, using plumber's hand tools.
- Drills and threads holes in water mains for service connections, using hand powered tapping tool.
- Replaces damaged pipe sections and seal joints; repairs and maintains pumps.
- Operates compactor, jumping jack and/or elephant foot to perform compaction of back fill material for pipelines and road repairs.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, and tools used in building, maintenance and repair or machine operation trades
- Knowledge of the operating principles of various electric or gasoline powered equipment such as pumps and generating equipment
- Knowledge of the fundamentals of water distribution
- Knowledge of the island's geography and street locations
- Knowledge of the operation of water storage, treatment and distribution systems and devices
- Knowledge of potential hazards of the trade and safety precautions connected with water distribution
- Knowledge of the tools and equipment and their skilled use as required in the work
- Knowledge of the layout construction functions as applied to construction work
- Ability to use testing apparatus to detect leaks
- Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to write clearly and legibly
Education & Experience
High School diploma, or equivalent, including or supplemented by courses in the mechanical, metal, plumbing or electrical trades, and two (2) years of experience in water plant maintenance work.
