This position is for one (1) General Transportation Techs level I, II or III depending on business need and the applicants' qualifications.
Salary Plan/Grade:
General Transportation Tech I: A14 ($3,350.00 - $4,094.50)
General Transportation Tech II: A15 ($3,650.00 - $4,337.08)
General Transportation Tech III: A16 ($3,950.00 - $4,594.16)

General Transportation Tech I:

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

General Transportation Tech II:

Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

General Transportation Tech III:

Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

General Transportation Tech I:

• Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
• Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
• Mows right-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance include trimming trees and bush.
• Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.
• Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

General Transportation Tech II:

• Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
• Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
• Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; perform welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
• Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
• Inspect barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
• Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations
• Moves/Picks up litter and roadway debris.
• Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mover.
• Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spill.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

General Transportation Tech III:

• May serve as work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
• Provides support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; and provides assistance to stranded motorists.
• Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
• Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
• Maintains picnic and rest areas, right-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
• Moves/picks up litter and roadway debris.
• Operates complex heavy equipment such as motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
• Operates heavy equipment such as front-end loader-one and a half cubic yard or more, tractor trailer haul truck, large tagline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
• Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

General Transportation Tech I:

• No Experience Required
• No Supervisory Experience Required

General Transportation Tech II:

• One (1) year transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation or related work experience.
• Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
• Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.
• No supervisory experience required.

General Transportation Tech III:

• Two (2) years transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection or related work experience.
• Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
• Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.
• No supervisory experience required.

Licenses and Certifications:

• Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
• Must obtain a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License without restrictions or have obtained a CDL "A” License.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Class A Commercial Driver’s License without restrictions and have an "N" endorsement

General Transportation Tech I and II:

• Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
• Maintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements.

General Transportation Tech III:
