Lumber Grader

Hull Forest Products is looking for a hardwood lumber grader/inspector. This person will work to measure, package, and organize the lumber products to be shipped out. This is a full-time opportunity working for a world class hardwood lumber manufacturer. There is an opportunity to take a 2-month NHLA Facility Grade Certification Program in TN. After completing the program, you are going to be NHLA certified Hardwood Lumber Inspector.

I. Summary

Inspects and grades milled, rough sawed, or dimensional stock lumber to make sure our product quality is consistent with NHLA rules.

II. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Visually inspect quality of lumber to be graded and grade lumber of varying dimensions and specie in accordance with NHLA standards
  • Examine lumber on table, moving belt, chain conveyor, or in racks for defects such as knots, stains, decay, splits, faulty edges, pitch pockets, wormholes, and defective milling
  • Mark lumber to indicate grade and processing instructions
  • Maximize yield by either determining if flaws in lumber need to be trimmed to maintain higher grade or to reduce the grade of lumber
  • Ensure lumber produced is within expected grade yields and take appropriate action or trouble shooting to correct
  • Removes unsatisfactory pieces from conveyor or table and places pieces on stacks, in bins, or on carts
  • Scale board footage and records results

III. Qualifications/Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • One-year certificate from college or technical school; or equivalent combination of education and experience (at least 1 year working experience)
  • Knowledge of wood species and NHLA trained are preferred
  • Mathematical proficiency preferred
  • Previous hardwood lumber grading experience highly preferred
  • Must be a quick learner, fast paced, extremely reliable and looking for long term employment
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations

Salary and Benefits:

Salary: $18.00 - $28.00 per hour

10 hour shift from Monday through Thursday; 40 hr./week at least

Overtime based on seasonal inventory
