Crewperson 5 - Grounds Maintenance


Position Function: The Crewperson 5 is responsible for the maintenance of all sites belonging to USD 259. Possess exceptional knowledge and demonstrate remarkable skills in the designated job area. Ability to carry out assignments and perform excellent quality work with minimum supervision. Demonstrate outstanding qualities in efficiency, initiative and dependability when completing various tasks.


Essential Performance Responsibilities:

  • Perform work in a safe manner and report any hazardous conditions
  • Accept the responsibility for assisting with the training, skill development and supervision of other team members.
  • Assist in maintaining good public relations, being cognizant that a Crewperson 5 represents both the Facilities Division and Wichita Public Schools.
  • Assume responsibility for all tools, supplies and materials.
  • Cooperate with other employees and maintain good public relations inside and outside his/her assignment.
  • Display willingness to be trained in all phases of the assignment and to increase his/her skills, thus, qualifying for advancement.
  • Possess a work ethic that is strongly oriented toward both efficiency and customer service.
  • Maintain appropriate licenses and certifications including a valid Kansas driver’s license at all times throughout employment.
  • Maintain current knowledge relating to technical information and policies concerning the Facilities area and assist the Supervisor in assigned administrative tasks.
  • Make decisions and offer solutions to the unit Supervisor concerning problems in the field.
  • Possess superior knowledge of procedures, materials and equipment utilized in the designated area while displaying good workmanship, planning, and leadership.
  • Support the organizational goals, the mission of the School Service Center and the district.
  • Work cooperatively with others and assist in maintaining open lines of communication.
  • Daily schedule may fluctuate to accommodate deadlines and delivery of services.
  • Haul heavy machinery and loads for necessary jobs.
  • Attendance at required meetings and in-services.
  • Work directly or indirectly under the Supervisor.
  • Must be able to perform all tasks involved in landscaping, mowing and maintaining all trees and shrubs in the district.
  • Responsible for training other crew members in the proper mixing and application of herbicides and other turf products.
  • Make decisions and offers solutions to the unit Supervisor(s) concerning problems in the field
  • Plan and estimate labor and material costs of assigned jobs. Assists with preliminary budget preparation
  • Maintain and services the equipment and trains crew members to do the same
  • Supervise and train employees on trimming and removal
  • Must properly mix and use the chemicals for weed control and maintain accurate records of treatment

Additional Duties

  • Assist with additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Equipment: The employee must demonstrate the ability to use various equipment assigned to the job position as needed. Use hand tools of trade and related power equipment. This position requires the ability to use SMART boards and iPads in addition to basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machine. Must always comply with USD 259’s guidelines for equipment use. Other tools that may be used may include but not limited to: blowers, chainsaws, edger (walk behind), hedge clippers, ice melt, man-lift, mowers (push, self-propelled and riding), pole saws, sprayers, trucks, tractors, trailers, trash vacuum and weed-eaters.


Travel: Travel between schools and central offices will be required.


Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Ability to perform all tasks and work the hours required.
  • Ability to wear proper safety equipment as required while performing the various tasks required for this position.
  • Ability to work in confined or high spaces; some strenuous physical work.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
  • Ability to work overtime on short notice may be required.
  • Ability to work productively in stressful situations.
  • Constant (6-8 hours): Total reaching and handling/gripping
  • Daily schedule may fluctuate to accommodate deadlines and delivery of services.
  • Exposure to chemicals, solvents and contaminated trash, grasses, pollens, etc.
  • Exposure to: Dust, odors, fumes, gases and chemicals (fertilizer, gas, lubricants and oil and paints)
  • Frequent (3-6 hours): Below the waist reaching, waist to shoulder reaching, sitting, standing, walking, operating foot controls, rotation of head/neck, flexion (head bend down and head bend back), twisting at the waist, forceful gripping, repetitive motion (multiple manipulation of same muscle group) and low impact vibratory tools (drilling/ sanding).
  • Frequent lifting 20 to 50 pounds; occasional lifting of 50-100 pounds; lifting over 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Limited (0-1 hour): Overhead reaching, climbing/ balancing (stairs, ladders, other), kneeling, crouching, crawling, lying down (back, side, front) and keyboarding/mouse.
  • Occasional (1-3 hour): Bending at the waist and fine finger manipulation.
  • Work in high places on ladders and/or lifts.
  • Work in standard office, shop and school building environments.
  • Work in wet and dusty conditions.
  • Working overtime on short notice is mandatory.
  • Maintain and service equipment and train crew members to do the same.
  • Supervise and train employees.

  • Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors.
  • Will work under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day to day tasks.
  • Will work with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Must exhibit a professional manner and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues.
  • Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues.
  • Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service.

Employee Punctuality and Appearance:

  • In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee’s supervisor or building administrator.
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of USD 259 and is appropriate for their position.

Qualification Profile:

  • A High School Diploma or GED equivalent is preferred
  • Knowledge of city codes, operate heavy equipment skillfully, and safely be proficient in use of tools and equipment
  • 3+ years of commercial mowing and landscaping experience is preferred
  • A valid Kansas driver's license is required to be maintained throughout employment
