Purpose Statement
The job of Head Night Custodian - High School is done to maintain an attractive, sanitary, healthy and safe facility for students, staff and public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure; ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner; and overseeing and supporting assigned custodians in the performance of their assignments.
This job is distinguished from similar jobs by the following characteristics: may emphasize different functions, depending on the size of the building and the number of custodial staff assigned to the crew.
This position reports to the Head Custodian.
Minimum Qualifications
- Pass a criminal background check and pre-employment drug test
- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least two years of custodial experience, including supervisory experience
- Work with limited supervision and adapt to changing work priorities
- Able to follow safety practices and procedures, including industrial cleaning methods, "Team Cleaning," I.P.M and Green Cleaning concepts
- Ability to adapt to changing work priorities; maintain confidentiality; set priorities; work as part of a team; multitask; work with frequent interruptions; prioritize; meet deadlines; and attention to detail and accuracy
- Communicate effectively and efficiently with diverse groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and positive working relationships with co-workers, students, parents, and other district employees
- Able to roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds
- Basic computer ability with Microsoft Office including Word and Excel
- Speak, read, write, analyze, and follow written and verbal communication in English; listen to, and understand information and ideas presented verbally or in writing
Preferred Qualifications
- Preference will be given to candidates who currently serve as a contract custodian, C lane or higher (day or evening)
Essential Functions
- Attends in-service training (e.g. blood borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, etc.) to receive information on new and/or improved processes
- Coordinates furniture set up and other site activities (e.g. snow removal, periodic deep cleaning, window cleaning, etc.) to ensure clean facilities and availability of equipment
- Informs site personnel and supervisor of custodial issues in the building (e.g. floor waxing, repairs to be made, etc.) to provide information regarding activities, safety and/or proper maintenance of facilities
- Inspects school facilities to ensure that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and identifying necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
- Leads the custodial staff in cleaning the assigned school facilities (e.g. classrooms, office, gym, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, pools, grounds, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, safe and attractive environment while utilizing industrial cleaning methods, team cleaning, I.P.M., and Green Cleaning concepts and cleaning tools such as Protexus Electostatic sprayers with Pathosans cleaner
- Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) ensuring the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities
- Maintains regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively
- Monitors building mechanical and maintenance systems (e.g. monitors custodians, etc.) ensuring they are functioning properly and identifying problems
- Participates in meetings as assigned for conveying and/or receiving information
- Performs other related duties as assigned ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
- Prepares documentation (e.g. assigned work schedules, etc.) to provide written support and/or conveying information
- Prepares facility for daily operations (e.g. opening gates, building access doors, disarming security systems, raising flags, crosswalk signs, minor repairs, etc.) ensuring facilities are operational and safe for occupancy
- Repairs furniture and equipment ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition
- Replenishes materials (e.g. paper towels, cloth towel rolls, toilet paper, hand soap, etc.) ensuring adequate stock for daily use
- Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, alarms, etc.) to take appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning educational environment
- Secures facilities and grounds to minimize property damage, equipment loss and potential liability to organization
- Supervises subordinate personnel (e.g. screening, interviewing, training, evaluating, disciplining, acts as the IPM site coordinator following all guidelines, etc.) to maintain adequate staffing; assuring accurate, timely and smooth completion of department responsibilities and goals, and enhancing personnel productivity and achieving objectives within budget
- Trains assigned personnel to develop custodial skills and safety awareness
Other Functions
- Assist other personnel as may be required to ensure an efficient and effective work environment
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 45% walking, and 45% standing. This job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
