Head of Contracts – North America, Acrisure Re – NY or Toronto
Acrisure RE is a growing global Reinsurance broker with offices in London, New York, Toronto, Burlington and Bermuda. It is part of a large US based group focused on financial services distribution across insurance, asset management, real estate services and cyber services that has had significant growth over the past 10 years in the US and more recently in the international space.
We are actively searching for a Head of Contracts for North America. This role will be based in
in New York, but Toronto will also be considered. Reporting to the Global Head of Contracts located in New York, the principal mandate of the North America Head of Contracts is to lead and manage the Contracts team located in the various Acrisure Re offices across the United States, Canada and Bermuda. It also expected that the North America Head of Contracts will have the capacity to manage a workload of accounts and draft and review reinsurance contracts and related documents.
Primary Responsibilities:
Head of Contracts – estimate 50% of time:
- Oversee and be the direct report for the North America contracts team to ensure that professional and consistent services are being provided across all Acrisure Re offices
- Ensure the team is adequately resourced to meet the business needs
- Actively and continually upskill the technical expertise of the team by such means as performance assessment and management, training and succession planning
- Perform technical and overall quality reviews of work product from the Contracts team
- Support Senior Management by contributing to the formulation and execution of Acrisure Re strategic objectives
- Work closely with Operations, Compliance and Broking within the company’s policies and procedures
- Proactively address operational and service delivery issues, elevating to the Global Head of Contracts as needed
- Liaison with the Head of Contracts – London as needed
- Keep abreast of contract related changes within the market, disseminate this information to the contracts team and adapt procedures accordingly
- Promote, build and maintain relationships with Brokers, Clients and Markets
- Participate in regularly scheduled information-sharing sessions such as conferences and seminars
Contract Reviewer - estimate 50% of time:
- Draft and deliver reinsurance contracts to internal and external clients, working closely with senior brokers throughout the lifecycle of the reinsurance placement
- Make informed, thoughtful and relevant recommendations to the contractual product, raising potential issues as appropriate
- Offer informed interpretations of contract language, ensuring contract wording reflects intent of reinsurance negotiations
- Proactively recommend coverage and wording enhancements and raise potential coverage issues, as appropriate
- Work with senior colleagues, brokers, clients and markets to effectively explain contractual concepts and participate in solutions to differing views in the contract language
- Engage, influence and negotiate with Clients, Markets and Colleagues in a professional manner
- Advise the claims department on claims collections with contract wordings issues. Liaise with clients and brokers to assist with the resolution of contractual disputes in order to avoid any possible arbitration or litigation
Qualifications / Requirements
- JD preferred but not required
- Minimum of 10 years working in the re/insurance industry with experience directly related to contract drafting and familiarity with the reinsurance placement process.
- Awareness of North America contract law and basic regulatory controls and general business trends
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) required
- Strong verbal and writing skills for complex communications (presentations, negotiations, etc.) with clients, markets and colleagues at senior levels
- Demonstrated ability to contribute as part of a high-performance team. Attention to detail in fast-paced environment and under deadlines that can be difficult at times
- Successful management of workload; able to manage expectations of all Clients and Stakeholders through effective communication and problem solving
- Prior management experience preferred
