Full-Time (0.90 FTE) 72 Hours a Pay Period
Days, Hours between 7:00 am - 7:00 pm
Weekends: Every Third Weekend
Holidays: Every Third Holiday

Position Overview:

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) is responsible for processing provider orders, maintaining patient records, providing general clerical duties for the Intensive Care Department, and assisting professional nursing personnel in the delivery of care. Interacts frequently with the providers to assure accuracy of orders and patient care functions. Accurately and appropriately process orders from the patient’s chart into the electronic medical record. Communicates high priority orders to the professional nurse in a timely manner.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates treatments and appointments with other departments and/or facilities and ensures appropriate materials are available for transfers. Interacts frequently with the providers to assure accuracy of patient orders and information. Supports the physicians and associate level providers on a continuous basis.
  • Complete direct scheduling of post hospitalization visits within the Cerner scheduling system.
  • Maintains an orderly environment in the nursing station and supplies the desk area with the necessary materials for easy access.
  • Coordinates patient visitor flow into the unit assuring patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Participates in and supports continuous improvement event initiatives.
  • Is constantly vigilant to the safety needs of patients, taking precautions as warranted and communicates concerns to the professional nurse in a timely manner.
  • Maintains order within the department, ensures adequate supplies and equipment necessary for quality and timely patient care are available and reports any malfunctioning equipment promptly and removes this from the patient care area to maintain a safe environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Completion of a Medical Secretary or a Health Unit Coordinator Program
  • Basic Computer Skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook. Familiar with Patient Information Database (Cerner)
  • Typing skills of at least 60 words per minute
  • Must be able to demonstrate a proficient understanding of medical terminology

Nonessential Skills and Experience:

  • Experience as a Medical Secretary or Health Unit Coordinator is preferred but not required
