Overall Objectives of Position The Heavy Equipment Mechanic Assistant assists the Heavy Equipment Mechanic in the mechanical repair and maintenance of heavy equipment assets, trucks, and any/all equipment associated with Public Work construction, or land management services. This job description is not an all-inclusive list of duties and responsibilities of this position. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic Assistant is expected to perform all duties and responsibilities necessary to meet the goals and objectives of applicable programs. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic Assistant is expected to live the Purpose and Values of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians and will go beyond the call of duty.

Primary Responsibilities of the Heavy Equipment Mechanic Assistant

  • Assists the Heavy Equipment Mechanic in day to day operations.
  • Perform vehicular body work repairs as needed.
  • Assists the Auto Mechanics when needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate person.

Day-to-day Responsibilities

  • Assists Mechanic in performing inspections and preventative maintenance, repairs and services for all Public Works Assets.
  • Perform vehicular body repairs to all Tribal assets, including body work, dent repairs, body replacements, partial and complete paint repairs.
  • Helps to facilitate Department of Transportation (DOT) inspections, maintaining DOT compliance.
  • Assists in maintaining accurate record of servicing and repairs to equipment assigned.
  • Assists in repairing and replacing damaged or worn parts.
  • Helps to dismantle and reassemble heavy equipment using hoists and hand tools.
  • Performs light duty tasks such as oil changes, tire repairs, general servicing, electrical equipment, etc.
  • Assists in performing transmission and motor overhauls.
  • Tests mechanical equipment after repair to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Provides assistance with various Public Works projects as operator, driver, etc.
  • Assists Mechanic in lowering or lifting heavy parts in removing or installing automotive equipment.
  • Assists in removing engines and other assemblies, and dismantles for overhaul or replacement.

Education/License/Certification and Experience Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Certification in Diesel Mechanics and/or two (2) years’ of related job experience performing maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment preferred.
  • Certification in body repair, paint applications or two (2) years’ experience required.

Skills Required

  • Knowledge of and ability to operate tools and equipment required to perform assigned duties. Must become proficient and efficient in the operation of tools, light equipment and machinery, i.e. tractors with implements, dump truck, etc., to perform assigned duties as required.
  • Ability to work independently and be reliable.
  • Ability to operate lawn mower, tractor, and other related equipment.
  • Must be in good physical condition with the ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, and twist for an extended period of time as well as climb, lift, hold, and move objects weighing a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as a team.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work odd and irregular hours, as needed.
  • Must have an insurable driving record according to Tribal insurance guidelines.
  • Ability to travel and participate in recommended required training, leadership development, and other events.
  • Ability to adequately and successfully perform all duties and responsibilities of this position.

COMPLAINTS ABOUT RECRUITMENT PROCESS:

Complaints about the recruitment or selection process for employment should be directed in writing to the Human Resources Director of PCI Tribal Government.

An applicant who disagrees with any issue related to the application or hiring process may submit a letter to Human Resources within ten (10) calendar days from the date the applicant knew or should have known that an adverse hiring decision had been made.

Human Resources will provide a written response within fourteen (14) calendar days informing the applicant of any administrative remedy to be provided. The decision of the Human Resources Director shall be final and not subject to further administrative appeal. Any applicant who has exhausted all administrative remedies may be eligible to file a complaint with the TERO Office.
