HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC II Job #630-1

Located in the heart of North Carolina’s Piedmont, Rowan County is attractively and conveniently nestled between the state’s largest city and its Capitol. Rowan County is made up of more than 20 departments and nearly 1,250 employees that are committed to providing a wealth of services to County residents and businesses.

The County is currently accepting applications for the position of Heavy Equipment Mechanic II to perform maintenance, repair, and problem diagnosis of heavy equipment such as bulldozers, self-loading scrappers, and backhoes at the Rowan County Landfill; performs major mechanical repairs and adjustments on power drive, brake, steering, electrical, cooling, gas engines, and related systems on a variety of light and heavy equipment; provides technical advice concerning length, cost, complexity, and extent of repairs needed; repairs and overhauls hydraulic systems and other specialized related equipment; supervises and trains the Heavy Equipment Mechanic I; and operates heavy equipment as requested.

Requires a thorough knowledge of the mechanical operation of many different types of heavy equipment including electrical, brake, and hydraulic systems; knowledge of heavy equipment parts and replacement parts; knowledge and skill in the application of heavy equipment maintenance, reading, and comprehending operations manuals; skill in the mechanics of complex diesel engines, gas engines, use of welders, air compressors, air wrenches, cutting torches, drill presses, grinders, and various hand tools and test equipment; and the ability to train and supervise the work of lower level staff.

Requires high school diploma supplemented by technical courses in diesel, electrical, hydraulic, power-train, and engine repair, and four years of experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic; or an equivalent combination of training and experience; a valid driver’s license is required.
