Position Overview

The Heavy Equipment Operator will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of construction equipment. This position is located at our solar project near Rapid City, South Dakota.

Essential Functions

  • Be committed to work safely and to wear all of the required safety equipment.
  • Report any unsafe conditions or acts to your immediate supervisor.
  • Be able to read and understand safety and employment requirements.
  • Complete pre- and post-trip inspections of equipment.
  • Ability to identify and record equipment repairs.
  • Be organized and able to execute verbal and written instructions.
  • Be able to work with others and also to work independently on assigned tasks.
  • Maintain good housekeeping at all times of cab and work area.
  • Put away equipment/tools at the end of the day and maintain good housekeeping at all times.
  • Accurately complete a daily time card and other paperwork as required.

Qualifications

  • Ability to operate several types of power construction equipment, such as skid steers, dozers, excavators, tractors, scrapers and motor graders to excavate, move and grade earth, and carry and place construction materials.
  • Repairs and maintains equipment.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) a plus.
  • Additional training or certifications are helpful.
  • Have a valid driver’s license; a CDL with endorsements may be required for some positions.

Physical Demands

  • Exerting up to 100 lbs. of force up to 1/3 of time, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force up to 2/3 of time, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force more than 2/3 of time to move objects.
  • Lifting and carrying material and objects, usually by holding them in the hands or arms or on the shoulder.
  • Climbing in and out of cab using three point contact.
  • Coordinating eye-hand and eye-foot movements and activities in using hand and power tools.
  • Hearing (either naturally or with correction) instructions, warnings and other verbal communication on the job site where construction and heavy equipment noises are present.
  • Seeing (either naturally or with correction) and observing at a distance, as in receiving hand signals.
  • Walking/balancing and moving about on foot to perform tasks where there is rough terrain and/or impediments such as sand, mud, ice or snow and uneven surfaces.
  • Talking for purposes of conveying information, warning and instructions to the foreman and other employees.
  • Capable of pulling and pushing along with other types of jarring impacts.

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to all forms of weather conditions (hot, cold, wet, dry, humid, windy) for the entire work day.
  • Exposure to constant or high noise levels.
  • May be required to work 10 to 12 hour days for 6 or 7 consecutive days for extended periods of time. Possible shift work.
  • May be exposed to welding arc.

Pay: $25.00 - $33.00 per hour
