Herbarium Curatorial Assistant Job at Delaware State University
The Claude E. Phillips Herbarium (https://herbarium.desu.edu/) at Delaware State University seeks a Curatorial Assistant for its collection’s digitization and curatorial upgrade. This is a grant-funded, full time (35 hours) position, with a 12-month term, renewable for up to a total of three years. The compensation package includes salary and benefits. The following are the functions essential to performing this job:
- Manage project's daily activities with the Herbarium Curator.
- Oversee and participate in digitization work, including specimen selection and refiling, label data capture and review, geo-referencing, regular quality control of images and metadata, and images and metadata management on a local computer.
- Participate in specimen identification and processing.
- Undertake taxonomic updates and collections reorganization.
- Assist with training and supervision of student-workers and volunteers in specimen digitization, including image capture, label data transcription, and geo-referencing as well as in specimen preparation, including specimen mounting, repairing, and accessioning.
- Coordinate and partake in outreach and education activities, including tours of the facilities, workshops, interactions with Herbarium visitors, and conference attendance.
- Perform other duties in support of Herbarium operations, including integrated pest management, specimen filing, and other aspects as appropriate.
The individual in this job must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation using some other combination of skills and abilities:
- Knowledge of plant taxonomy/systematics.
- Computer literacy, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and web search.
- Ability to climb ladder and step stool as well as to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
- Ability to work both independently and cooperatively as a team.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Consistent time management qualities.
- Bachelor's Degree in Botany, Biology, or related fields with taxonomy coursework.
- Experience working in herbaria or natural history collections.
- Familiarity with specimen digitization and/or curation.
- Willingness to travel out of state.
- Tolerance for long hours of sitting and/or standing and for repetitive manual tasks.

- Interaction with Herbarium personnel, including students and volunteers.
