Role Purpose

Responsible for managing daily operations of complex histological tests and procedures on tissue samples (QA/QC, equipment maintenance, workflow, service levels, operational oversight, workspace), staff (first level supervision, scheduling, coaching, staff development, CE, etc.) and performing analysis within the regulatory requirements.


Responsibilities

  • Manages individual(s) including but not limited to: hires, trains, assigns work, manages & evaluates performance, conducts professional development plans. Ensures that the productivity and actions of that group meet/support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership.
  • Develops and adheres to departmental staffing, revenue and/or expense budgets. Responds to changes in the business which may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments, techniques and procedures on equipment, tests, and methods as well as other information relating to the laboratory and writes and / or updates procedures for assigned areas as necessary.
  • Establishes systems and processes to streamline tasks and eliminate waste. Takes responsibility for the daily operations, both technically and administratively to ensure quality services.
  • Responsible for Supervising laboratory activities, monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of performance are maintained. Assure all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from established performance specifications. Ensure patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning. Oversees and manages processes of safe handling and disposition of remains. Ensures par levels of supplies are maintained.
  • Manages histology work flows and processes that support the subspecialty pathology model of Washington University. Works with medical director to design and complete complex validation of immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescent antibodies. Manages unique histological testing for neuropathology (brain), pediatric pathology, non-decalcified bone and whole orbit ophthalmic pathology. Coordinates daily work flows to distribute histology slides to outside hospitals and clinics. (BWC, Parkland Hospital, and the WU Dermpath Center). Prepares lab scheduling for 24/7 operation.
  • Interacts with medical directors and researchers to support clinical trials and research at BJH / WU as well as Multi-Institutional projects. Interacts daily with pathology residents and participates in their orientation and training. Liaison for the histology training program, ensuring appropriate mentoring and clinical training. Provides leadership in the absence of the lab manager.

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Physical/Life Science/related

Experience

  • 2-5 years

Supervisor Experience

  • < 2 years

Licenses & Certifications

  • MT/MLS - ASCP or equiv
