HSC is seeking a full-time Housing Specialist to work with several of our programs to help tenants, landlords, and other community members with their housing-related and other needs.
This position will provide services related to:
- Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP), which helps eligible community members with a portion of their back rent, utility bills, and potentially rent due in the future.
- Emergency Housing Voucher Program (EHV), which helps decrease homelessness and assists people in obtaining decent and safe housing by subsidizing a portion of their monthly rent.
- HSC Rental Resolutions Program, which supports Tompkins County landlords to build better tenant/landlord relationships in an effort to reduce evictions.
This position will also work closely with other members of the HSC staff (including other housing staff and the 2-1-1 Tompkins/Cortland Helpline) and with partners from other organizations in the community.
This position is an opportunity for applicants who are interested in helping people in Tompkins County to learn about and apply for programs that can improve their housing stability. This position will also make connections with other organizations and services to meet households’ other needs. This job uniquely offers the ability to work with both tenants and with landlords to reduce evictions, as well as with courts before and during eviction proceedings.

The qualifications of the position are:
- Strong verbal communication skill. Able to present to groups, meet with clients and other stakeholders, and appear in court settings.
- Written ability to keep case notes, contribute to reports, and develop outreach materials.
- Comfort with computers and web-based systems.
- Knowledge of or interest in learning the human services network.
- Desire to help members of the community with their housing-related and other needs.
- Demonstration of a helpful, positive, and nonjudgmental approach, showing respect and fairness for each client.
- Ability to travel within Tompkins County for meetings or court sessions. Must possess a valid driver’s license or be able to meet the transportation requirements of the position.
Position: $23.00 per hour, full-time non-exempt, 37.5 hours per week. Note, this is a temporary position currently funded through September 30, 2023.
A flexible, hybrid schedule (in-office and remote) may be possible. Some in-office hours are required. Remote work requires access to high-speed internet.
