ArtCenter College of Design is searching for an experienced Industrial Design Faculty, DEI, open rank, full-time (non-tenure track) to join our team.

This position is one of six new faculty job openings across the disciplines of the College, which seeks to expand upon the strategies and perspectives available in the ArtCenter classroom, foster institutional expertise in the intersections between art and design practices and legacies of racism and colonialism, and advance more just and equitable futures both within and beyond the ArtCenter community. Preference will be given to candidates whose work engages global, anti-racist, and decolonizing frameworks in relation to the fields of art, design, and/or media.
Job Summary
The Industrial Design Undergraduate Programs at ArtCenter College of Design are looking for one full-time faculty member with a background in design practice and teaching experience that reflects and/or focuses on diversity, equity and inclusion. Their studio work should reflect these issues across multiple design strategies. Design research, process and outcomes that reflect awareness of and inclusion of DEI and cultural issues are integral to the position.
The position will carry a workload including both teaching and departmental duties: per term, each week, for 14 weeks: three 5-hour studio classes plus 3 faculty service hours. Faculty will be expected to maintain an active professional or research practice. Salary will be commensurate with professional and teaching experience.
This position requires full-time teaching responsibilities, administrative service, and instructional duties, which may be outside of Faculty’s Department, and which may include occasional substitute teaching, service on college-wide committees such as Faculty Council, faculty and student mentoring and advising, core curricular planning, scholarship and portfolio student reviews, physical gallery and program website curation, outcome assessments with corresponding data collection, and attending departmental and College all-hands meetings. Full-time faculty are also responsible to help create visibility and recognition for the program and to maintain external relationships with designers and leaders experienced with issues of diversity, inclusion, and equity.
Essential Functions
Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teaching in: Product Design, Transportation Design and Spatial Experience Programs
  • Provide classroom instruction, maintain and report student attendance, preparation of instructional material including class syllabi, grading students’ assignments and exams, posting students’ grades, consulting with students, replying to students’ inquiries, and facilitating course evaluations
  • Mentor and guide students beyond the classroom

Other Responsibilities and Service Opportunities

  • Help cultivate guest lectures, visiting designers, publications and student competitions
  • Cross-disciplinary course content development (ex: business, graphics, IxD, packaging, sustainability, mobility, branding, etc.)
  • Help with student gallery, grad show and web content
  • Help create visibility and recognition for the program among prospective students, the design community, creative industries, and potential donors and sponsors
  • Support the development of a local and professional network of designers and professionals that are able to support the overall and/or specific goals and needs of the department and college.

Required Qualifications:

  • BS, BA or BFA in Industrial Design or Product Design, from an accredited college or university or equivalent professional experience in their field
  • Teaching experience at the college level.
  • At least five years of professional work within the design field as a design practitioner.
  • Experience working on projects across diverse industries and market segments.
  • National and/or international network and connections that may benefit the program and students
  • Demonstrated commitment to building impactful and future facing approaches to industrial design education.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with tact and discretion and recognize the confidential nature of ArtCenter business, as well as requirements under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
  • Must be able to work with and understand our culturally diverse student and faculty body with their needs and goals
  • Demonstrated experience in and commitment to diversity, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within Art Center’s diverse communities

Preferred Qualifications

  • A record of design awards, patents and publication is an asset
  • Knowledge of public relations, social media, and media promotion
