LINK (Linking Individuals to Necessary Knowledge) is YAI’s free information and referral service. LINK services are provided by a highly motivated team with expertise in the full range of I/DD supports. They field hundreds of calls and emails each week regarding services for children and adults with I/DD, eligibility information, and steps required to receive services. LINK staff provide also provide informational workshops on the New York State service system and facilitate a variety of programs for people with I/DD. The department oversees YAI’s annual Autism and Latino conferences and participates in community outreach throughout New York City to share information about YAI and peer providers.
About the Position:
LINK is now accepting applications for a full-time Information Specialist. The LINK Information Specialists are essential staff members who communicate over the phone and via email, connecting people with accurate, up-to-date details about the full breadth of services available for children and adults with I/DD. They share information professionally and patiently, helping demystify the bureaucracy of state agencies like OPWDD, DOE, and DOH, to link people to available help. LINK staff pride themselves on remaining current with changing eligibility requirements and new services, and on sharing these details in a clear, coherent, and culturally sensitive manner.
Key responsibilities:
- Respond to various inquiries from people with I/DD, family members, and service providers via telephone and email.
- Refer families and service providers to YAI programs, as well as programs offered by other agencies.
- Take detailed notes on conversations to ensure accurate record keeping, entering data in LINK’s Salesforce database.
- Assist with projects including vetting resources and updating agency information in both internal and external systems.
- Facilitate a range of programs for people with I/DD and their families on independent living skills, socialization and networking skills, and other programs designed to cultivate independence.
- Conduct presentations to school, community, and professional groups.
- Represent YAI at council/subcommittee meetings, community fairs, and conferences.
Education and Experience:
- AA/AS required; higher college degrees preferred
- Fluency in Spanish required. (LINK services are available in Spanish and English.)
- Demonstrated commitment to helping others, listening and problem-solving
- Excellent computer and organizational skills
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Customer service experience desirable.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience with I/DD population preferred
- Experience with Salesforce or other database systems
- Knowledge of social service and I/DD systems preferred
- Willingness to work occasional evenings/weekends
- Interest in guiding people to information, serving as their advocate through an often-complicated process
Payrate: $21.63 to $21.63 an hour
