Inmate Health Nurse (Full Time RN) Job at Union County

Note: This position comes with a sign on bonus of $2,500 after successfully completing six-months of service and an additional $2,500 at the successful completion of one-year of service. This position is also eligible for shift differential. The Inmate Health Nurse, under limited supervision, performs professional nursing work in the care, treatment, observation and counseling of inmates at the Union County Jail. Work is performed in accordance with the North Carolina Nurse Practice Act, agency regulations and provider orders. Identifies Health needs, promotes treatment, administers care, and monitors health status of the individual inmates. Employee must exercise considerable initiative and good judgment while ensuring proper protocols are followed. Employee must also exercise tact and firmness in frequent contact with inmates, employees, and management. Public Health is responsible for preparedness activities in the event of a natural disaster, disease outbreak, and other threats to the health of the public. Employees in this classification participate in preparedness response activities which may include mass vaccination clinics, sheltering, dispensing medications from the Strategic National Stockpile, and/or other needed response activities as directed.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Collaborates with physician and physician extender to ensure timely and appropriate care to the inmate population.Performs medical and mental health screenings on inmates, repeats annually or as needed.Ability to work proactively and autonomously.Evaluates and responds to inmate sick call request.Develops appropriate plan of care.Assists provider with sick call exam and treatment.Implements provider orders accurately and timely.Instructs jail staff on inmate health care and needs.Coordinates and or administers medications to inmate patients as order by provider.Provides wound care, applies appropriate dressings.Provides emergency and first aid care.Checks and records vital signs, blood sugars, eye exams, reports deviations from normal.Obtains specimens for testing according to provider orders.Monitors for and reports reactions to treatments, and medications.Reports changes in inmate’s physical and emotional condition to provider in a timely manner.Provides inmate education and appropriate discharge planning.Ability to perform under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.Checks on patients for medical clearance in Intox.Performs administrative and clerical functions, to include preparing medical charts, monitoring released inmates and preparing inmate medical records for provider sick call clinics.Faxes medical records to other institutions to provide continuity of inmate health care.Maintains accurate Medical records by recording all provision of care and, communication regarding care accurately and timely in the appropriate format on the appropriate form.Follows facility rules and OSHA standards.Complies with NC Nurse Practice Act.Ensures patient privacy.Performs other related duties as assigned.
