Interpreter Job at Maryland Courts
Serve as a Court Staff Spanish interpreter in the courtroom and for court-ordered mediation, plea negotiations and courtroom interpretation for interested parties as deemed necessary by a presiding judge. Interpret outside the courtroom for services ordered by the court. Review the File and Serve Interpreter queue in Odyssey and accepts electronic filings for request for spoken language interpreter. Enters information on internal spreadsheet and prepare through secure.scheduleinterpreter portal for interpreter. Enter interpreter information in Odyssey and update information on spreadsheet once interpreter is secured. Assists the Clerk’s Office counter and information desks, free-of-charge events conducted by the courts and to assist the public to access court services. Assists Court interpreter coordinator(s) as needed. Will act as backup to Court Staff interpreter located at Towson District Court to schedule cases for Towson and Essex when the need arises.
Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Experience: One (1) year of experience providing interpreter services as a freelance or court interpreter.
Note: Required certification: Maryland State Certification or Member of State certification in the Council for Language Access or Federal Certification as a Spanish Court interpreter.
Skills/Abilities: Native or near native knowledge of English and Spanish to provide interpretation with correct grammar, idioms and pronunciation. Knowledge of legal terminology and the legal process. Knowledge of the Maryland Judicial system. Knowledge and compliance with the Code of Professional Conduct for Court Interpreters. Ability to interpret in simultaneous and consecutive modes, to sight translate documents varying in levels of difficulty and legal terminology, and to team interpret effectively. Ability to remain poised in stressful and pressured situations. Ability to provide consistent, professional and courteous service. Ability to use tact in responding to staff, public officials and the general public. Good phone etiquette skills. Ability to work independently and accurately. Ability to operate a computer, knowledge of computer programs (Word, Excel, Outlook). Ability to perform all essential functions of the position.
