Interpreter - Bilingual Spanish
The Medical Interpreter coordinates and provides interpreting services for staff and limited-English speaking patients and their families in order to facilitate communication so that the patient or family member can participate in their health care interactions and decisions. The interpreter will also provide sight translation of documents, including but not limited to, consent forms and educational material. The Interpreter must be able to work well under pressure and react quickly to solve complex linguistic and ethical problems as they arise. The interpreter should interpret in an accurate and complete manner; and should follow the Code of Ethics and the National Standards of Practice for Medical Interpreters. The interpreter should have an extended knowledge of specialty medical terminology and be able to perform independently in a fast pace environment. Medical interpreters will translate written materials from source to target language in a precise way. Interpreters will effectively identify cultural differences as potential communication barriers that could interfere with the exchange of information between providers, patients and their families.

Casual (up to 20 hours per week)

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrates accurate ability to interpret verbal and transcribe written medical and rehabilitative information in both the Target Language as well as in English.- Assists with research/updated in the field of Language Services.
- Adjusts to changing situations and work assignments.
- Collaborates with peers, physicians and other members of the team, as appropriate.
- Complies with policies and procedures concerning infection control and safety in order to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
- Covers the desk/telephone and language services requests, maintains proper filling of documents, and office materials
- Promotes a professional atmosphere through courteous communication, cooperation, and respect for patients, visitors and members of the health care team.
- Recognizes and respects social, cultural and religious beliefs and practices in the provision of care.
Qualifications
- Bilingual Spanish
- Certificate in Bridging the Gap and/or Culture Smart
- Prior interpretation and translation experience is required
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with focus on Healthcare or Hospitality
- 3+ prior healthcare experience preferred
- The ability to influence people, build relationships and collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills (both languages)
