ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COUNSELOR
The Elementary School Counselor assists students in overcoming problems that impede learning and assist them in making educational, occupational and life plans. The school counselor organizes, plans, and implements programs; conducts individual and group counseling. The Counselor counsels students toward effective decision making and problem solving. The school counselor assists students in developing their academic as well as their career plans and is available to provide prevention and intervention services to address their immediate needs. The Elementary School Counselor also is responsible for the facilitation of the state test.
The school counselor enhances self-esteem, communications, group interaction, and core skills that will encourage successful growth and development of students.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Master degree in Counseling or related field and must hold or qualify for Colorado Licensure.
- Demonstrate skills in oral and written communications.
- Ability to interact effectively with diverse population.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and work without direct supervision.
- Expertise in conflict resolution procedures.
- Knowledge of career counseling.
- Knowledge of interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of community resources to include drug & alcohol programs, family counseling, and crisis intervention teams.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The School Counselor’s responsibilities include:
- Provides individual and group counseling sessions.
- Holds Character Education Classes.
- Provides Crisis Interventions Services, as needed.
- Coordinates with outside agencies and makes appropriate referrals with necessary.
- Serves as a liaison between students, parents/guardians, school, and outside agencies.
- Participates in the Counselor Cadre.
- Assists with the collection, organization, and interpretation of student data for intervention purposes.
- Consults with staff on the social/emotional and behavioral issues of students.
- Provides conflict resolution sessions when necessary.
- Sets up and maintains files and records of individual and group counseling sessions.
- Serves as the School Assessment Coordinator for the CMAS test.
- Performs such duties as may be assigned by the Principal or Superintendent.
Reports to: The Building Principal
Terms of Employment: Same as Teachers. If desired, 10 additional days as per diem added.
