La Voz Part-Time Innovation Fellowship

The Arizona Republic/lavozarizona.com part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, are inviting college students and recent graduates with a talent for using innovative ways to bring our bilingual reporting to underserved and underrepresented communities to apply for a spring innovation fellowship.

The bilingual team at La Voz has rolled out community-centered projects and initiatives focused on addressing information gaps of Latinos in Arizona.

The innovation fellow will work alongside the team and its collaborators in seeing those projects through and assist in creating a free, community-informed resource guide.

The part-time 12-week program places emerging professionals in the downtown Phoenix newsroom working alongside bilingual and award-winning journalists. Fellows will be awarded a $4,500 stipend for the duration of the fellowship.

College juniors, seniors and graduate students enrolled in a journalism or related degree program as of Nov. 1, 2022, are eligible.

Applicants must be fluent in both English and Spanish and be based in Phoenix or willing to relocate for the duration of the fellowship.

La Voz is a Spanish-language news product of the USA Today Network bringing local news coverage of Phoenix and Arizona to Latinos and Spanish speakers. It is the sister publication and bilingual desk of The Arizona Republic/azcentral.com.

The Republic is the largest local news site in the USA Today Network of more than 200 newspaper and media sites, with coverage focused on metro Phoenix and Arizona. The Republic also oversees operations for USA Today Network sites in California, Oregon, Utah and several other Western states. In 2018, the newspaper was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Journalism for a project examining the implications of building a border wall from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico.

Responsibilities:
  • Tackle daily assignments that could include analyzing reports, data analyzing, writing, researching, fact-checking and creating visual graphics and stories for social media and others.
  • Gather information collected from sources and input into a reader-informed housing database and guide.
  • Assist in creating a newsroom guide to establishing new audiences and building trust in traditionally marginalized communities.
  • Participate in community listening sessions and assist in data collection.
  • Interview potential readers and users in person, over the telephone or via computer terminals, and in writing.
  • Research written materials, graphic and photographic materials, as well as audio and video recordings.
  • Accurately report information, either orally or electronically.
  • Help in the production of graphics that would support innovative projects.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions.
Requirements:
  • Recently graduated journalism student or current student enrolled in a journalism program at a college or university.
  • Phoenix, Arizona-natives strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Spanish fluency required.
  • Strong command of AP writing, spelling, grammar and style.
  • Curiosity, versatility, flexibility, communication, collaboration and willingness to learn.
  • Solid fact-checking and reporting skills.
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented and flexible.
  • Open to new ideas, new experiences and learning on the job.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience performing a wide variety of tasks under the pressure of deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required.
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check and drug screen.
