The Meng Lab at the University of New England is searching for a laboratory research assistant to investigate neural plasticity in brain pathways contributing to chronic corneal pain and dry eye. Come be part of a highly collaborative and dynamic team of investigators here at the University of New England with ample opportunity to develop and learn new research skills. This position requires independence in performing experiments and involves overseeing and training student researchers.

Responsibilities
Primary
  • Perform surgeries on anaesthetized rats for research purposes
  • Perform immunocytochemistry in rodent brain tissue
  • Perform tear measurements and behavioral studies in rodents
  • Oversee and train student researchers in basic laboratory techniques
  • Perform histology in rodent brain tissue
  • Prepare reagents and standards; order supplies and equipment and reagents
  • Oversee maintenance & upkeep of laboratory equipment
  • Maintain laboratory in a clean and safe fashion


Secondary
  • Read and discuss original research papers
  • Learn new techniques as needed

Qualifications
  • BS in biology, neuroscience or related field required (MS preferred)
  • Minimum of 5 years experience with rodent research
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Must be able to collaborate well with others
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Must be able to work independently and have supervisory experience
  • Must be careful and detail-oriented
  • Must be self-motivated and able to prioritize tasks
  • Good written and oral communication skills required
  • Must be willing to learn new skills and deal with new and challenging situations enthusiastically.
  • Flexibility is essential
