Overview
The Rutgers University Center for Ocean Observing Leadership (RUCOOL) is large field going research group. It conducts research around the world using novel autonomous technologies. These technologies provide large environmental data sets that are analyzed for a range of theoretical and applied data products. RUCOOL has added four new staff positions in the last 6 months as we continue to expand our research and operations team.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Researcher III for the Department of Marine and Coastal Science. This position is to support COOL’s mission in the field preparing and operating underwater ocean gliders and supporting deployments and recoveries of these gliders onboard boats. The focus will be supporting externally funded research programs.

- Work to maintain, prepare, pilot and deploy autonomous underwater gliders.
- Proficient in the deployment of oceanographic profiling equipment which includes, but is not limited to conductivity-temperature-depth sensors, oxygen sensors, wave sensors, optical backscatter sensors, pH sensors, acoustic sensors as well as radiometers.
- Works on the Glider Team on maintaining all aspects of the glider AUV fleet to ensure continuous operability.
- Inspects, diagnoses and repairs all hardware issues related to AUVs including internal and external operational systems, emergency systems, all attached acoustic, optical and electrical instrumentation and internal electrical systems.
- Will be familiar with the command and control software and be able to pilot gliders.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelors Degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- A minimum of two years of relevant experience preferably in Oceanography.
Certifications/Licenses
- Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must be familiar with oceanographic equipment and autonomous underwater gliders, and must have experience working on boats at sea.
Preferred Qualifications
- Preference is given to candidates who have experience in supporting large field expeditions.
- Programming languages such as Matlab or Python are a plus.
- Experience working with Teledyne Webb Slocum Gliders.
Equipment Utilized
- Teledyne Webb Slocum Gliders, SeaBird CTD sensors, WetLabs EcoPucks, Satlantic Spectral Radiometers, Aanderra Optodes.ADCPs, Sequoia Scientific LISST sensor, SeaBird pH sensors, ASL AZFP (Acoustic Zooplankton) sensor, and VEMCO passive acoustic trackers.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Should be able to conduct research onboard oceanographic research vessels and remote field camps.
- Deploys for extended field campaigns on the ocean.
- Ocean research includes, but is not limited to Antarctica, the Mid-Atlantic Bight, the Southern Ocean, Bermuda, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, US west coast and Gulf of Maine.
- Conducts field sampling using including oceanographic equipment.
- Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. and will have to work on off hours, nights and weekends on occasion.
