Veterinary Lab Assistant

Animal enthusiasts with veterinary assisting knowledge and skills are needed to fill a Full-Time Veterinary Lab Assistant position in a thriving and fast paced general practice located in Fairfax, Virginia. At Town and Country Animal Hospital, our Veterinary Lab Assistants have a strong attention to detail, are hard workers, and have a true passion for animal welfare and veterinary care. The “right candidate” will enjoy working with a diverse group of coworkers and animals, will be caring and compassionate, and possess a strong working knowledge of veterinary care and nursing applicable to the veterinary treatment team.

Duties and Responsibilities: The Veterinary Lab Assistant is a vital member of the Treatment Team. They support the Technicians and the Veterinarians with patient care by facilitating the processing of inhouse diagnostic veterinary tests, preparing samples, coordinating transportation, and administering as well as communicating results. The Lab Assistant helps to ensure the continuity of care to our patients, and communication to our clients and fellow treatment team members. Their work supports the hospital’s commitment to pet welfare.

• Collect and process lab samples to be sent out
• Process in-house lab samples and enter results into computer database
• Utilize laboratory equipment to make microscope slides
• Oversee lab book to ensure all clients are called with lab results
• Updating medical records through the patient file system (Cornerstone)

• Review and call back nurse line messages from clients
• Maintain cleanliness of workspace, equipment, treatment room, and exam rooms. Ensuring hospital protocols are followed to maintain high standards of care.
• Assisting with duties in pharmacy and treatment as requested by your supervisor

• Ability to remain calm and communicate effectively when interacting with clients, team members, doctors, and supervisors.
• Excellent attention to detail, process driven, ability to multi-task and respond with a sense of urgency, perform work duties with initiative and commitment to high standards.
• Enthusiasm for team work- possessing a strong work ethic with excellent communication skills.
• Ability to learn and perform a variety of tasks to contribute to overall team success. Work independently on tasks as assigned.
• Dedication to excellent customer service and animal welfare. Treat all patients, clients, and hospital/kennel staff with respect and compassion.

Position Requirements:

• Reliable transportation to and from work.
• Availability to work weekends and all major holidays.
• Ability to lift a minimum of 30lbs; work involves continual walking and standing throughout shift; physical demands include walking, standing, bending, reaching, stooping, and kneeling.
• Must be at least 18 years or older; high school level education or equivalent.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Previous Work Experience:

• Animal Hospital, any position: 6 months (Required)
• Veterinary Lab Experience: 6 months (Preferred), will train the right candidate
• Veterinary Assistant Experience: 1 year (Preferred)
• Customer Service: 1 year (Preferred)

Job Type: Full-time, 30+ hours per week

Schedule/Availability: Varied shifts as needed

• Monday through Friday: 7am – 2pm, or 1pm – 8pm
• Saturday- Full shift 7am to 5:30pm. (Scheduled on alternating rotation.)
• Flexible availability to work varied shifts is strongly preferred.
