The University of Notre Dame (ND.jobs) is accepting applications for a Laboratory Support Technician (Preferred Candidate/Limited Term).

The Laboratory Support Technician will be working with faculty/staff members and graduate/undergraduate students at the University in support of instructional laboratories (Chemical Engineering Labs I and II; Bioengineering Labs) and will be responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the equipment in the undergraduate laboratories. This includes but is not limited to trouble shooting, installing, repairing, and reconfiguring lab equipment, data acquisition systems and software packages. In addition, this position will oversee and attend the academic project work laboratory by providing a managerial presence during normal business hours and may also assist in research laboratories including supply ordering and cylinder/equipment audits. This position requires successful teamwork and interest in an academic environment. Student and faculty support is essential. Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Maintain existing laboratory equipment and experiments and coordinate the development, fabrication, installation, and commissioning of new laboratory experiments including, but not limited to: 1. Updating computers and software for associated equipment, 2. Submitting and following up on repair work orders, 3. Ensure proper long term shut down of equipment between semesters including proper preventative maintenance per the manufacturer or lab manager instructions.
- Yearly equipment inventories for Controller's Office; yearly cylinder audits for Procurement Services: research laboratory purchasing and assistance; special projects as assigned by Department Chair, Business Manager, or DUS; department lead for interface with Engineering & Science Computing; facilities management.
- Provides technical assistance to faculty and graduate student teaching assistants, interacts with undergraduate and graduate students in a friendly and professional manner to diagnose problems with the experiments and/or equipment, maintains culture of safety in the laboratory at all times, this position has the authority to dismiss students from the laboratory for unsafe practices.
- Maintain proper inventory of laboratory stored supplies (chemicals, gloves, safety supplies etc.), inventory documentation and purchasing/ordering for all teaching labs and some research labs. Maintain the department's tools and equipment needed for repair and analysis of the laboratories experiments.
- Comply with all safety requirements of the laboratory including the proper collection, handling, and disposal of all non-hazardous and hazardous waste in accordance with governmental and institutional regulations; monthly eye wash testing; department lead for the annual Lab Safety validation with Risk Management personnel.
There is a preferred candidate for this position.
This is a 3-year limited term position.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in a relevant STEM field, or 7 years of direct and relevant industry or academic experience in an experimental laboratory.
- 3 to 4 years experience
- Experience with instrumentation-related laboratory; excellent communications skills both verbal and written; self-driven and able to work independently with minimal supervision; experience with instrumentation, data loggers, and sensors; ability to work with a wide variety of PC computers at the hardware level and the ability to do necessary system backups.
