Law Enforcement Officer, MCS (Multiple locations throughout Montana) Job at State of Montana
The Monana Department of Transportation is recruiting for multiple MCS Law Enforcement Officers for our Weigh Stations. Locations available include: Coutts, Culbertson, Wibaux, and Haugan. These positions are responsible for helping to regulate the international commercial and agricultural motor carrier industry. They are also responsible to enforce international, federal, and state commercial motor carrier laws at both fixed and mobile locations throughout Montana. MCS Enforcement Officers regulate and enforce law individually or with other officers, in densely populated and remote areas of the state. Officers have full autonomous decision-making authority on a wide range of regulation and enforcement issues, including height, width, and weight restrictions, vehicle licensing and motor fuel tax requirements, hazardous material transportation restrictions, and vehicle, operator, and load safety.

- Conditional offers of employment will be made based upon rank in the hiring list after the MPAT, written test and oral interview are completed in addition to successful completion of a thorough background investigation (including a nationwide criminal history check) and reference checking

MPAT & National Police Officer Selection Tests required to be passed.

Once hired with Motor Carrier Services, you will receive approximately 14 weeks of one-on-one instruction in our Field Training Officer (FTO) Program. In addition, you will attend the Officer Basic class at MLEA within one year of your date of hire.
MCS Officers also have the opportunity to grow and advance within the department with our Career Ladder advancing to Corporal status as well as competing for open Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain positions.
As per contract, MCS officers will not be allowed to transfer from one location to another more than one time a year, unless approved by management.

- have a valid driver’s license from any state and have at least three years’ driving experience at the time of application
- be a citizen of the United States
- be a Montana resident at the time you are appointed as a sworn trooper
- be at least 18 years of age at the time of application
- be of good moral character and in sound, active physical and mental condition.
- applicants with felony convictions that could have resulted in imprisonment in a federal or state penitentiary are disqualified.
- misdemeanor convictions for criminal offenses are reviewed on a case-by-case basis

Selection Process:
Entry-level applicant is one who has not graduated the MLEA Basic Law Enforcement Officer Basic Course in Montana and/or does not have any law enforcement experience.
A lateral applicant is someone who meets one of the following requirements:
1. has graduated from the Montana Law Enforcement Academy (MLEA) Law Enforcement Officer Basic Course within the last five years OR 2. Possesses a current Basic Law Enforcement POST Certificate (from Montana or another state) AND has been employed in a full-time sworn peace officer position within the last five years.
Selection Process - Entry-level applicant:
Applicants who successfully pass each of the following steps qualify for consideration for employment.
Written Testing - National Police Officer Selection Test: The test takes a total of 75 minutes and is made up of four separately timed sections. The mathematics, reading comprehension and grammar sections are multiple-choice and true or false questions. The incident report writing section requires answers written in complete sentences. Although most of the questions relate to police duty, no prior knowledge of law or law enforcement is needed to answer. Failure to meet the minimum passing score of 70% for each section eliminates an applicant from the selection process. A Study Guide for the National Police Officer Selection Test is available to assist applicants prepare for the written test.

Physical Fitness Test - The physical abilities test used is the Montana Physical Abilities Test (MPAT). The MPAT test measures the strength, flexibility and endurance law enforcement officers need to perform the essential functions of their positions. Applicants must meet the Montana Law Enforcement Academy’s physical fitness requirements for acceptance into the Law Enforcement Officer Basic Course. Failure to meet this minimum level eliminates an applicant from physical fitness testing and from the selection process.
