The Lead Custodian

It is the responsibility of the Lead Custodian to ensure that buildings are clean, safe, and in operating condition. Performs routine and non-routine cleaning in an assigned area or areas to provide the proper building sanitation by following prescribed cleaning frequencies. Provides project work periodically and responds to other miscellaneous requests submitted by staff and other tenants. Works under limited supervision performing routine cleaning tasks by using prescribed chemicals and machines. The functions include trash removal and disposal, sweeping, dust mopping, high and low dusting, wet mopping, vacuuming and spotting carpet, restroom sanitation, cleaning glass, mirrors and fixtures, restocking soap dispensers and paper supplies, sanitizing drinking fountains, cleaning walls, vents, moving furniture, and collecting recycled paper. This position is designated as "Essential Personnel and is subject to after-hours recall.


The Expectations

Essential functions and responsibilities of Lead Custodian include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Ensure custodial tasks are completed as assigned;
  • Orients, trains and provides performance review input for custodial staff;
  • Report all custodial concerns of the building to the Custodial Supervisor;
  • In the absence of the Custodial Supervisor, will coordinate custodial staff’s daily operations and keep the Deputy Chief of Public Works informed of progress;
  • Secures the building in accordance with established schedule ensuring complete lockdown at end of the shift;
  • Primary contact for building events and ensuring customers' needs are met;
  • Adheres to safety procedures and proper workplace ergonomics;
  • Removes trash and recyclables, sweeps, dust mops, vacuums, sanitizes restrooms, cleans glass, cleans horizontal and vertical surfaces, restocks paper and soap dispensers;
  • Is responsible for the proper care and storage of all cleaning equipment and cleaning materials;
  • Responds to a variety of requests from staff to include minor maintenance, moving furniture, unloading and storing deliveries, setting up for functions and activities;
  • Follows Blood-Borne Pathogen procedures, responds to accidents or potential safety hazards which may require contact with chemical spills, blood, or other bodily fluids;
  • Performs other duties as requested.


THE QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school and at least two years of building cleaning experience. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Satisfactory health condition as certified by a competent medical authority. Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; ability to perform manual and semi-skilled work; ability to get along well with others; ability to read; thoroughness, cleanliness.


THE PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS

Cleaning and maintenance work done typically walking and standing; some lifting and carrying objects weighing 12-50 pounds, some furniture moving, occasional operation of vehicles. Work environment exposes employee to potential minor injuries and frequently adverse weather. Occasional exposure to potentially hazardous substances. Frequent and regular contacts with internal staff and the outside public for the purpose of providing custodial services.


THE SALARY RANGE

The hiring range for this position is $16.17 - $19.97 per hour (approx. $33,644 - $41,550 per year.) Starting offer is based on applicable education beyond minimum requirements and internal equity. The position also provides excellent benefits including 12 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, VRS retirement, and continuing education/training opportunities. This is a full time, FLSA non-exempt position. Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with Local Government Personnel Policy, §P-60.
