Position: Lead Maintenance Worker - Parks (Union – General)
Department: Parks, Recreation and Arts
Salary: Range $5226.83 - $$7030.12 Non-Exempt – Overtime Eligible
Benefits eligible & 401(a) payment equal to 2% of base salary.
Summary:
Provides lead oversight to parks and public works staff involved in parks/facilities maintenance, performs highly skilled parks/facilities maintenance and administers special projects and programs as assigned. Receives direction from supervisory or management staff as assigned.
Responsibilities:
- Prioritize, assign, and review parks maintenance and public works maintenance work activities by providing lead oversight to field staff; determine personnel, equipment, and materials needs for work assignments.
- Evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommend improvements and modifications, maintain pertinent logs and records, and prepare various reports on operations and activities.
- Participate in the selection, training and evaluation of staff; provide or coordinate staff training; and recommend discipline and implement disciplinary procedures as directed.
- Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints and inquiries and recommend corrective action as necessary.
- Provide general administration of court-referral, community service program, and prison crew program.
- Contact contractors for bids on various jobs; submit prices and descriptions for items needed in the budgeting process and validate expenditures in conformance with budget.
- Perform highly skilled parks/facilities maintenance and public works maintenance tasks as required by assigned area of responsibility.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent. Additional specialized training in parks maintenance, horticulture, agriculture or related field is desired.
- Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in parks/facilities maintenance similar to a Maintenance Worker II in the City of Lancaster.
- Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license; ability to obtain a Class B California driver’s license - as required by the position including appropriate endorsements according to area of assignment.
- Possession of a Pesticide Certificate from the State of California preferred and may be required.
- Proven knowledge of advanced journey-level working practices and techniques associated with parks/facilities maintenance responsibilities including irrigation, construction, plumbing, carpentry and concrete; safe usage of equipment, tools, and materials, including fertilizers and chemicals, used generally in all areas of parks and facility maintenance; pertinent local, Federal, and State legislation, regulations, and rules, including PRA department policies, rules, regulations, and practices; ways to prepare, apply and direct the application of pesticides and herbicides; office practices and procedures including use of computers (Maxi-com, HVAC); principles of work and worker safety.
- Proven ability to provide lead oversight, including training and evaluation, and assignment and prioritization of staff assignments; perform highly skilled parks/facilities maintenance duties as necessary; design, instruct, oversee and install/repair irrigation systems as needed; know and understand maintenance activities and observe safety rules; analyze problem equipment/tools; identify safety hazards; locate equipment and tools; interpret work orders; remember how to operate equipment; and explain jobs to other employees. Analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine proper course of action; complete required reports/logs; communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; respond to emergencies and call-outs.
- Proven ability on a continuous basis, know and understand maintenance activities and observe safety rules; analyze problem equipment/tools; identify safety hazards; locate equipment and tools; interpret work orders; remember how to operate equipment; and explain jobs to other employees.
- Intermediate skill in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook; proficiency in common office equipment, i.e. printer, scanner, copier and fax machine.
