The primary role of the Lead RV Captain is to assume responsibility for stewardship, maintenance, and operation of three vessels, including the MV Oyster Creek, the RV Carolina Coast, and the RV Jones Bay. The Lead RV Captain will also provide guidance and assistance to other RV Captains within the organizational unit. The position will supervise one Engineer and two Deckhands. Two vessels, the MV Oyster Creek and the RV Jones Bay, are dedicated to transporting and deploying materials for reef construction, and one vessel, the RV Carolina Coast, is tasked with performing various Fisheries Management trawl net surveys. The Lead RV Captain will perform this work under the direction of the Habitat and Enhancement Section’s Field Operations Coordinator and the Environmental Program Supervisor. This position works closely with administrators and scientists to plan and execute research projects. Periodic overnight stays aboard vessels will be required.Key Responsibilities: Oversee maintenance and operation of three vessels, including the 120’ MV Oyster Creek, 44’ RV Carolina Coast, and 40’ RV Jones BayPerform (2) 2–4-week trawl surveys annually, in June and September, at various points throughout Pamlico Sound.Perform oyster reef construction activities throughout the year, transporting up to 150 tons of materials per tripProvide guidance to other division captains on vessel maintenance, operation, and mobilization logisticsHeavy equipment operation or trucking transport.Supervise one RV engineer and two deckhands The Division of Marine FisheriesThe North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is responsible for the stewardship of the state’s marine and estuarine resources. The DMF’s jurisdiction encompasses all coastal waters and extends to 3 miles offshore. Agency policies are established by the nine-member Marine Fisheries Commission and the Secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality. North Carolina is a member of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, and the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and sufficient experience in commercial fishing or other vessel work to be a master of a vessel similar to the vessels operated or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications US Coast Guard Master's Licensure for tonnage required for operation of vessel intended for use. Must have or be eligible to obtain a NC Commercial Driver's License at employee's expense.
